Just got back from Vivo City. Had couple of beers at an outlet and was served by a German waiter. Nope, not the owner nor a relative of the owner as we asked his colleagues. Guy is not a citizen but they could not tell me what pass he was on.

No other country allows this. There is however a reciprocal arrangement amongsts Japan, OZ, NZ, UK and some scandinavian countries where citizens can take up temporary jobs up to 6 mths to a year in each others country.

I would like such jobs open to all ages of Singaporean at times like this.

I think we need to stop giving excuses for not employing Singaporeans. Lets not assume. If the salary can put food on the table for the German, I don't see why Singaporeans should think otherwise in times like these.

The German and all other foreigners can be invited to take the jobs back when the economy returns to normal.

I am sure they will understand that a country needs to look after its citizen during extraordinary times. I will feel the same if the Germans do exactly that when they are in trouble.

Problem is with the elites of Singapore who expect ridiculous salaries, don't want to pay taxes, months of bonuses, etc.

They have to stop this attitude & stop driving up the costs in Spore. Only then can the majority of Sporeans lower ther expectations at what is a liveable salary

Look at LKY, he's already made $$$$ from Spore & he still expects a salary of $3+ million what

Most of the cheap foreign labours are used to building of infrastructure, mainly Garment projects. It makes Garment spending lower thus bigger deviation over expenditure and revenue.

i can't speak for other employers, but for myself, it was difficult to hire locals. i was looking for production staff & delivery driver few months back. of course i pay market rate.

I hv nothing against Pinoy or Pinay or their gahmen. But fucking Starhub & other biz hiring them to deal with public better make sure their friggin English is easily understood! I had to spend lots of precious time trying to understand their brand of english........ Starhub makes the cost savings while I suffer as the customer. yes, these are the common "complains" i hear from locals looking for a job. Are they valid, yes & no. Obviously locals have not reached a pt whereby they are desperate enough yet.
