BERN - The Swiss government declared renowned film director Roman Polanski a free man yesterday after rejecting a request by the United States to extradite him on a charge of having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.

Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the decision came after the US justice department failed to provide records of a hearing in which Polanski claimed his case had been settled and sentence agreed. The minister added that Washington had accepted Bern's move.

The announcement follows months of uncertainty over whether Polanski would have to return to the US after having been arrested last September upon arrival in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival. He was kept under house arrest at his Swiss chalet in the mountain resort of Gstaad.

Polanski, the Oscar-winning director of films including Rosemary's Baby and The Pianist, was accused of plying his victim with champagne and the drug Quaalude during a modelling shoot before raping her. AGENCIES

Polanski went on to win or receive nominations for best director, best picture over 15 times after fleeing the US.

i would hardly consider that "lost the prime of his life"

however, what is seldom mentioned is that his pregnant wife was brutally murdered by members of the psycho Mansons family a few years prior to his rape charge.

I'm surprised the case isn't covered by the Statue of limitation in the US. This is so ancient history & even the so called victim would prefer not to go to court over this.
