Acting Manpower Minister Mr Gan Kim Yong told Parliament on Friday that the government will not bow to calls for Singaporeans-first manpower policies as the nation cannot afford to lose its competitive edge.
The government will continue to make foreign manpower available to anchor key investments as well as fill jobs Singaporeans lack ability for or do not want to do, he said.
Under current MOM guidelines, local companies must have a minimum of 6 Singaporean workers on its payroll before it is allowed to employ foreigners which does not make any distinction between skilled and unskilled positions.
While I do not advocate shutting out foreigners completely, the government has to fine-tune its labor policies to ensure that jobs which Singaporeans are willing and have the skills to perform do not end up with foreigners.
Lately, I have noticed an increase in the number of foreigners working in government-linked companies while previously there were none.
For example, bank tellers at DBS/POSB branches are helmed by Filipinos as well as counter staff at Singapore Post and SingTel. Filipino clinic assistants are now a common sight at most major medical groups. There are even hospital clerks from China !
