<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->BEIJING - A US woman injured in a stabbing attack in Beijing was in a critical but stable condition after eight hours of surgery, the US Olympic Committee (USOC) said on Sunday.
Ms Barbara Bachman suffered multiple lacerations and stab wounds in the attack in central Beijing on Saturday. Her husband, Todd, died in the attack by a Chinese national who later took his own life.
'After undergoing approximately eight hours of surgery yesterday afternoon and evening, she is in a critical but stable condition at a Beijing hospital,' a USOC statement said.
It said members of her family, including her son-in-law Hugh McCutcheon who is a coach with the US men's volleyball team for the Olympics, were with her.
Tang Yongming, 47, from the eastern city of Hangzhou, attacked the Bachmans and a Chinese tour guide shortly after midday at the centuries-old, 45-metre-high Drum Tower in central Beijing.
Tang, who had no previous criminal record, died after leaping from the Tower, police said.
Assaults on foreigners are rare in Beijing. Police had said the tour guide, also injured in the attack, was out of danger. The US men's volleyball team were due to play their opening game against Venezuela on Sunday. Hugh McCutcheon, a New Zealander, will not be on the bench, the USOC said. -- REUTERS
