<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->CHIJ St Joseph's Convent (SJC) raised about $100,000 through a golf tournament at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club yesterday.
The money will go towards building an indoor sports hall in the school. With the sum from the golf event, the school has so far raised about $200,000 this year.
It needs $300,000 for the sports hall, which will be four storeys high and built over the school's existing netball court .
As the school is a Government-aided one, it needs to raise at least 5 per cent of the estimated $5 million cost. The Government will foot the rest.
During the Budget debate this year, the Government said it will set aside $70 million to equip all schools with such sports halls.
At yesterday's golf tournament, participants contributed between $1,000 and $20,000 to play in flights of four. SJC student and golfer Amelia Yong, 16, joined VIPs Lim Boon Heng, the Minister from the Prime Minister's Office; Member of Parliament Cynthia Phua and former Minister of State Peter Sung - to form a flight.
