The terrorist threat is gradually increasing on French territory. Only four days after the attack at the Gambette high school in Arras, police officers from the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI) arrested and took into custody a radicalized 16-year-old teenager in Seine-et-Marne. This minor, who was in contact with Romain T., an 18-year-old young man of Chechen origin and already incarcerated, had a plan for violent action. According to information from Le Parisien, the two individuals had planned an attack on targets who had committed blasphemy against Islam, according to their statements. Romain T. apparently had the idea for this plan after hearing a merchant mention his religion using words that he considered offensive. The 18-year-old also wanted to attack people described as “disbelievers.”
Romain T. was arrested this summer and indicted for “criminal terrorist association,” and placed in pre-trial detention last July. A source close to the case confides that this is a “very radicalized and very dangerous” profile and which was the subject of reports for advocating terrorism, for threats against teachers at his school. As for the second suspect, he “provided Romain T. in a group on social networks with elements allowing him to identify an individual who spoke badly about Islam.” He was presented this Friday, October 20 to an anti-terrorism judge for indictment. The teenager will already be placed in pre-trial detention.
According to a 2020 DGSI intelligence note, radicalized individuals originating from the Caucasian movement are now widely represented within the French jihad. “Often very young, the radicalized members of this new generation develop a jihadist dialectic distinguishing itself from that of their elders,” it is noted in particular.
