On Friday, 22 March, two former Mediapart journalists and a former jihadist lawyer were sentenced to a suspended sentence of between 10 months and three years in prison. They are said to have transferred funds to members of the Islamic State to help them leave the “caliphate” and, according to them. The heaviest sentence was for the former lawyer, who had been given a three-year suspended prison sentence. He admitted to having participated in the corruption of an Iraqi army officer in an attempt to spare the life of the jihadist Maximilian Thibaut. While the former lawyer has confessed to corruption, he refutes the charges of terrorist financing. He will still have to pay a joint customs fine of EUR 10 000, together with the two journalists.
