FOUR SIM LIM SQUARE CHEATING SALESMEN JAILED BETWEEN 4 TO 14 MONTHS
Submitted by farhan on Wed, 14/10/2015 - 4:01pm
On 14 October 2015, District Judge Toh Yung Cheong sentenced four employees of the now-defunct Sim Lim square electronics shop Mobile Air to between 4 and 14 months jail for cheating unsuspecting customers. Koh Guan Seng was sentenced to 14 months jail, Kam Kok Keong to 11 months' jail, Kelvin Lim Zhi Wei to four months' jail, and Lim Hong Ching sentenced to six months' jail.
Mobile Air boss Jover Chew Chiew Loon hired the 4 men as freelance sales executives from between 2013 - 2014. Using the cheating modus operandi devised by Jover Chew, the four would cheat unsuspecting customers and receive 40% commission of the "profits" make from their unscrupulous sales. In total, the 4 men cheated customers of $16,149.
Mobile Air’s cheating modus operandi was to offer customers an attractive price for electronics and to collect full payment from customers immediately.
After paying, instead of receiving their products, the customer would be subject to unfair sales tactics. The cheating salesmen would add additional items to invoices previously signed by customers. The device would be withheld until further payment was made for the item. No mention of additional payments or fee were stated during the initial negotiation of prices and more than 25 customers fell victim to this scam.
Before delivering the sentence, District Judge Toh Yung Cheong said: "I agree with the prosecution on the harm to the victims, and the harm caused to the reputation of Singapore as a tourist destination. I know that each case is separate and I looked at each case individually. While it was Jover Chew who gave the instructions, it was the individuals who chose their actions. They acted like thugs."
