Academic Huang Jing and wife have left Singapore: MHA
from yahoo news
Academic Huang Jing, whom the Singapore government said was an “agent of influence”, has left the country together with his wife, said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday (8 September).
According to media reports, MHA did not provide details on the date of their departure.
The 60-year-old academic and his wife, Shirley Yang Xiuping, are permanently banned from Singapore and their permanent residency was cancelled last month. Originally from China, the couple are United States citizens.
On 4 August, MHA labelled Huang “an agent of influence of a foreign country” who worked with intelligence organisations and agents from that country. The country has not been named. The ministry added that Yang was aware that her husband was using his position to promote a foreign country’s agenda.
Huang, a former Lee Foundation Professor on US-China relations at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, is a China expert whose views on the Middle Kingdom were often sought by the media.
MHA said on 23 August that the couple had to leave the country “within a stipulated grace period” after their appeal on 7 August against the government’s decision was rejected by Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.
