MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea have made official bids to sign Franck Ribery.
But Real Madrid are poised to put one over the might of English football again after emerging as favourites with a huge £70million offer.
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge yesterday revealed United and the Blues had joined the race for the Frenchman, rated the hottest property still on the market.
But Real are determined to add Ribery to the £62m capture of Kaka from AC Milan and the impending £80m arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from United.
All three deals smash the old world transfer record of £46m set when Zinedine Zidane joined Real from Juventus in 2001.
Rummenigge said: "Chelsea have lodged a bid, as have Manchester United and Barcelona.
"We're completely relaxed and proud to have one of the three greatest players in the world who's attracting so much interest in the transfer market.
"We're approaching it calmly because we're the ones who have the power to make the decision."
Bayern, desperate to keep their star, rejected the bids from the English clubs as well as Barcelona.
Winger Ribery, 26, would prefer a move to Madrid.
The Bernabeu giants offered £40m cash plus Dutch stars Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart.
Real yesterday secured a £70m loan from Spanish bank Caja Madrid.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may help Real Madrid recoup some of their extravagant summer spending by thrashing out a £37m deal to sign winger Arjen Robben, striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar and defender Gabriel Heinze

Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy has begun talks with Real Madrid over a stunning £36million swoop for Arjen Robben, Gabriel Heinze and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
The White Hart Lane chairman went to Spain to seal a deal for the trio who, despite their quality, are surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu following Kaka’s arrival and the impending capture of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Levy had discussions with sporting director Miguel Pardeza, in charge of a clear-out at Real.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp made Ruud van Nistelrooy his prime target. But Levy has yet to be convinced the 32-year-old former Manchester United striker, who would command £90,000 a week, would be good business following his return from almost a season out with a knee injury.
Instead, Tottenham have moved for 25-year-old former Chelsea winger Robben, Huntelaar, also 25, and Heinze, a long-time target.
Robben is the surprise of the trio. In his first season at the Bernabeu he helped Madrid become champions, his fourth league title in six years.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has questioned whether Newcastle striker Michael Owen has "the bottle" to cut it in the Premier League

Dave Whelan has questioned whether Michael Owen still has “the bottle” to hack it in the Premier League.
That is why the Wigan owner won’t be bothering to respond to the Newcastle and England striker’s “buy me” brochure.
Whelan gave a sharp “no” when asked if he would sign Owen and said: “One, he’s too expensive and, two, has he got the urge and the bottle and the drive to do what the Premier League demands?”
While dismissing ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid star Owen, Whelan also warned Manchester United that they face stiff competition from Real, and another foreign club, believed to be Bayern Munich, for Antonio Valencia.
Despite splashing a world record £80m on Cristiano Ronaldo, Real seem intent on spoiling Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer a second time.
And Bundesliga big-hitters Bayern have muddied the waters further by asking about Ecuadorian ace Valencia.
That suggests that, despite insisting Franck Ribery, another target of United and Real, is not for sale, they are preparing for life without the Frenchman.
Owen, who leaves Newcastle this summer, has sent clubs his CV. But Whelan isn’t interested – even though he revealed he was willing to pay Real £15m for him in the summer of 2005.
“He’s looking a bit injury prone,” said Whelan. “It’s a big question, because he has been a great player.
“I’m not criticising the lad. He has been a magnificent player and can still do a hell of a job for somebody. That’s only my opinion. Everton and Liverpool might think differently.
“For us to pay someone over £25,000 a week is a hell of a lot of money. For them it seems to be peanuts.
“When I tried to sign him, I wanted him to be available to play for England.
“It was the World Cup the following summer.
“I said to his agent I would pay the £15m to bring him here and let him leave when he wanted.
“I was ready to bring him over here until Christmas, so he could play in the league and be fit and be ready to play for England.”
Whelan will sell Valencia to whichever of the big three he wants to join.
He said: “All season Real have followed him big-style, Manchester United have followed him big-style and there is another club who have just come in from Europe, who we were unaware about.
“I swore I wouldn’t reveal the identity of the other team because they are frightened of Real or United finding out.
“It all rests on this – who does the lad want to go to?
“It’s no good me saying I’m going to sell him to Real or to United. If he says he’s not going, then that’s it.
“We’re just sat on the fence now. United have got to replace Ronaldo and I know Fergie likes this lad. I don’t blame him because this lad is a brilliant player.
“We’re just waiting to see what’s going to happen.
“United have got a meeting with us in the next three or four days, Real Madrid have got a meeting with us in the next three or four days and the other team have asked for a meeting.
“We can’t tell anybody where they’re going to go and play. If Real offered £2m more than United, or vice-versa, it would depend on where the lad wants to go.”
Whelan said he had not had a firm bid for £17m-rated Valencia and added: “I don’t expect it will be resolved for another 10 days or a fortnight because he’s been away on holiday.
“We’ve got to get the lad in and tell him what we have got on the table. ‘Do you want to stay or do you want to go there?’ We’ll just have to wait and see. I think it’s this weekend he is back.
“When you say a bid, there’s been fees spoken about. If you say have we had a bid in black and white – no.
“When you’re dealing with Fergie you’re dealing with the master.
“Fergie knows what he wants and Fergie knows what he’ll pay. It doesn’t matter what I’ll say.”
