During the Space Race the US astronauts the absolute superstars. They were selected from the best and bravest in the country to undertake space exploration for humanity.
The media attention they got made them gods. They would arrive at Nasa in their sports cars with screaming fans waiting.
So it's no wonder so many of them got divorced.

armstrong hated publicity and was a very private person. all those public appearances were forced on him by nasa, the gov and sometimes potus, as part of his obligations as a public employee. once he left nasa, he went into teaching in ohio to be back near his farming hometown. he was married to his 1st wife until 1994 and lived in that same farm in all those years. he met his 2nd wife in 1992 in a golf club while having lunch. he called her 2 weeks later. she didn't call him first. when he found out she was trimming a tree, he rushed over to indian hill which was over 35 minutes away. he was 62 then, already an old geezer. they had a romance from there on, and his wife found out later and divorced him.
