SINGAPORE: A body was found along Dunearn Road on Tuesday morning.

Police said they received a call at around 10.20am about a person lying motionless on the ground.

Upon arrival, police found a Malay man, believed to be in his 60s or 70s. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The case has been classified as unnatural death.

Illness is one of the causes classified as natural death. The other cause of natural death is old age and simply die in bed or drop dead. Such cases with doctors willing to certify as such ends there and then. Unnatural death means there're signs of possibilities of suicide, accident, violence or foul play. Such cases go to the pathologist for post mortem. The IO classifies the cases first, then confirm the case or reclassify the case according to the findings of the pathologist.

For example, a body found in a reservoir. Suicide is never assumed in the first instance, but it's obvious it's unnatural death. It has to be classified as unnatural death first in to order to send the body to mortuary. Whether, suicide, accident, misadventure or murder, that has to determined after post mortem.

Another example, a body found at home. The family called their family doctor to certify natural death, i.e. due to illness or old age. If the doctor certified so, then funeral could proceed immediately thereafter without needing to involve police investigation and post mortem, i.e. cutting up the body and sewing back.
