SINGAPORE: A fire broke out near the H&M boutique at JEM shopping mall at Jurong East on Friday night (Apr 3).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the blaze on the first level had started from electrical wires in the exterior wall of the building. No one was hurt in the incident.

Mr JM Koh, who sent in photos and videos of the fire, said there was no evacuation from the mall, although a fire alarm had gone off at a McDonald’s fast food outlet opposite H&M. When he chanced upon the scene at about 10.10pm, a crowd of “about 50 people" had gathered.

Mr Koh said staff were seen trying to put out the fire with a hose, and they asked onlookers to move aside. The blaze was extinguished with a water jet, said SCDF.

“The fire was not that big, but not that small,” he said. “It was between the exterior infrastructure and the building itself.”

Mr Koh said despite the fire, shoppers were still seen milling inside the H&M boutique.

This is the latest in a string of fires at JEM. In August 2013, a deep fryer caused a small blaze at the NTUC FairPrice Xtra supermarket, and a car caught fire in the basement car park days later. In September that year, false ceiling panels on the first floor collapsed due to a burst water pipe, injuring three people, and causing the mall to be temporarily shut for checks.

Singapore standard is really going downhill. So many MRT breakdowns and now fire breakouts in shopping mall. What is the authority doing on fire safety issue of this and other shopping malls? Must wait until the whole building be burnt and people die then do something serious to punish the mall owner?

All the resources deployed to the fire at Geylang. Jurong East is too far away. :D

How can a mall be having fire repeatedly? Something must be wrong somewhere which the authority should do a thorough check and punish the owner for causing danger to the shopping crowd.

Hill Street - Geylang - Jurong East.

Three fires in two days. Wow!

blame it on sub-standard made-in-china electrical components and improper installation and use of the electrical system. it happens very often these days in the u.s., especially in sf the past couple of months.

so what did USA govt do about it? it is not okay to have fire due to sub standard components and improper installation.

What is funny is that you now have to DIY if you have a fire.

Sporeans were led to believe that we were paying the PAP $$..$$$ to look after things but they seem to be incompetent . We have had so many problems e.g. flash floods, terrorists walking out of detention, dengue, rioting, train breakdowns, corruption, ah longs causing a nuisance,....

Doubt things will improve as long as we have same clowns in charge.

Maybe the emperor of the other side, wants to buy new clothes for his darling, so they shopped at H&M boutique & since they are so thrifty, they avoided Orchard Rd...& need to burn to send the clothing over....ha ha ha ha :D
