If these heroes are filthy Cecas, they will also be rewarded with full sinkie citizenship and be parachuted into cushy jobs in one of the gahment agencies. And probably be match-made with a wife of same color.

But if they are local dumb sinkies, they will only be given handshakes by their MPs and be labelled as busybodies.

A devastating fire at a River Valley Road shophouse Tuesday (8 April) has gained international attention after it left one child dead and 21 others injured, including Mark Shankar, the 7-year-old son of Indian politician and Bollywood actor Pawan Kalyan.

The fire broke out at an educational centre for children, where panic ensued as the blaze quickly spread through the building.

Mark, who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, was rushed to the hospital, and the incident has sparked widespread concern across the globe, especially given the involvement of a prominent political figure’s child.

The fire began around 9:45am, quickly engulfing the three-story building.

The swift action of bystanders, including construction workers who used scaffolding to rescue trapped children, prevented further casualties.

Among the injured was Mark Shankar, who suffered severe burns to his hands and legs and had difficulty breathing due to smoke inhalation.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Pawan Kalyan, who is the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India, remained in India to fulfil official duties before flying to Singapore to be with his son.

Tragically, the fire claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl who succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with children being evacuated from the building and transported to nearby hospitals.

Emergency medical teams administered oxygen and treatment to the injured.

Shankar, who was attending classes at the educational centre at the time of the fire, was among those quickly transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, with initial reports suggesting no signs of foul play.

Surge in complaints against financial influencers prompts MAS review

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is seeing a rise in complaints against financial influencers, or "finfluencers," with eight complaints already filed in 2025 – surpassing the average of five in previous years.

Most complaints stem from two influential figures who sparked mass withdrawals from an investment platform, Chocolate Finance.

The rise in complaints has prompted the MAS to review its safeguards and regulatory framework to ensure that financial influencers remain within legal boundaries.

According to Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan, the two influencers in question had publicly shared their reasons for withdrawing funds from Chocolate Finance, which led to a significant surge in customer withdrawals.

This raised concerns regarding the extent of financial influencers’ influence on the public’s financial decisions.

Chocolate Finance itself had suspended instant withdrawals on 10 March, citing high demand, and later announced that all requests from 10 to 18 March were processed.

Despite this, the incident has shed light on the growing issue of finfluencers providing unlicensed financial advice to their audiences.

MAS maintains that financial influencers can contribute positively by promoting financial literacy but must avoid providing specific financial advice unless licensed under the Financial Advisers Act.

Tan emphasised that influencers who offer financial advice must be regulated to ensure consumer protection.

If influencers make regular recommendations on investment products, they fall under MAS’s jurisdiction and must adhere to regulations.

In addition to the rise in complaints, MAS is also reviewing the disclosure practices of platforms like Chocolate Finance.

They are focused on ensuring that these platforms meet regulatory standards and that customers are adequately informed about risks and withdrawal limitations.

MAS's investigation aims to protect both investors and the credibility of the financial advisory space in Singapore.

Southeast Asia’s trust in the US surged before Trump’s tariffs were announced. Could the tariffs reverse the trend and shift allegiance back to China?. REUTERS/Hasnoor Hussain(REUTERS / Reuters)More
Southeast Asians have shown increased trust in the United States, with many preferring to align with the US over China, according to the latest "State of Southeast Asia Survey".

This shift, however, took place before President Donald Trump announced a new series of reciprocal tariffs, which experts warn could undermine the positive sentiment.

The survey reveals that 52.3 per cent of respondents would align with the US in a geopolitical contest, signalling a change from last year when China was the favoured power.

With countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia facing tariffs of up to 49 per cent, experts worry that Southeast Asia may reconsider its alignment and turn to China for economic opportunities.

The growing concern is that the tariffs could undo the trust the US had built with the region, just as China’s economic and military influence continues to rise.

The region remains a strategic battleground for both powers, and the recent tariffs could tip the balance back toward China.

Is microcheating a form of infidelity, or just harmless online behaviour?

A growing number of relationship experts think it might be the former.

Microcheating is a term gaining popularity in modern relationships, referring to subtle, often secretive behaviours that could signal emotional cheating.

Actions like texting, messaging, or liking a co-worker’s photo might seem harmless, but they can undermine trust and lead to larger relationship problems.

Experts suggest that with the rise of remote work and digital communication, microcheating has become more common, with people unknowingly crossing boundaries.

While not physically or emotionally intimate, these actions can create a bond with someone outside the relationship.

The key to preventing microcheating is open communication and clear boundaries.

Couples should talk about what behaviours are acceptable and what makes them feel uncomfortable.

Addressing concerns with curiosity and respect can help preserve trust and intimacy in relationships.

Unfiltered office coffee may be worse for your health

Coffee brewed in office machines might be more dangerous for your heart than you think after a new study found that coffee made at work, especially from brewing machines, raises cholesterol levels. (Photo: Getty Images) (Zinkevych via Getty Images)More
Coffee lovers may want to rethink your caffeine fix at work after a new study uncovered potential risks to cardiovascular health.

A new study reveals that your workplace coffee could be raising your cholesterol levels, thanks to higher concentrations of cafestol and kahweol found in machine-brewed coffee.

Researchers studied coffee from various workplace machines in Sweden, including brewing, liquid-model, and instant machines.

The findings show that coffee brewed with metal filters in office machines contains compounds linked to elevated LDL cholesterol, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

The researchers suggest that switching to filtered coffee can help reduce these compounds and improve heart health.

The study emphasises that even small adjustments, like opting for paper-filtered coffee at work, could reduce the risk of high cholesterol and its associated health issues.

While coffee has health benefits, particularly for the brain and metabolism, the brewing method is crucial for heart health.

This study serves as a reminder that what you drink at work could affect your long-term health.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Operation Lionheart contingent has successfully concluded its mission in Myanmar, offering vital search, rescue, and relief efforts following the devastating earthquake that struck the country on 28 March.

The 80-member team, including four search canines, returned to Singapore on Tuesday (8 April), receiving a heartfelt welcome at Changi Airport.

The SCDF team played a crucial role in Myanmar’s recovery, working alongside international teams from Indonesia and Vietnam to rescue survivors and recover bodies from collapsed structures, including a nine-storey hotel in Naypyidaw.

They also established medical outposts, providing essential care to 130 survivors.

As a token of appreciation for the local collaboration, the SCDF donated vital supplies, such as tents and medical supplies, to local authorities and hospitals in Myanmar.

One of the most poignant moments came when the team gifted a hydraulic cutter to Myanmar’s fire department, which had been instrumental in rescuing a man trapped under rubble.

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, along with other officials, personally greeted the team, expressing gratitude for their service.

The contingent’s contributions to Myanmar’s ongoing recovery are a testament to Singapore’s commitment to international humanitarian aid.

Despite their return, the earthquake’s aftermath continues to affect Myanmar, with the death toll surpassing 3,600 and over 5,000 injured.

The situation remains dire, with aid agencies warning of potential disease outbreaks due to unsanitary conditions exacerbated by heavy rains.

China’s neutrality challenged as two nationals fighting for Russia captured in Ukraine

Ukraine says two Chinese troops have been captured in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese nationals fighting for Russia in the ongoing conflict in the Donetsk region.

This startling revelation adds to the geopolitical complexity of the war, as China’s supposed neutrality is called into question.

Zelensky’s announcement, which included personal data and bank cards of the detained individuals, has sparked diplomatic tensions and calls for an explanation from Beijing.

The captured Chinese nationals were reportedly fighting on behalf of Russia, a close ally of China since the start of the Ukraine invasion in February 2022.

This discovery intensifies concerns about China’s role in the conflict.

Zelensky, in a social media post, noted the potential involvement of more Chinese fighters with Russia and urged diplomatic action from international bodies.

“The presence of Chinese nationals fighting for Russia is a clear signal that Russia is determined to prolong the conflict,” Zelensky emphasised.

The capture has raised alarms about the credibility of China’s claimed neutrality.

Despite Beijing’s official stance of peace, it has maintained a strong political, military, and economic alliance with Russia.

Zelensky and Ukraine’s foreign minister have pressed for an explanation from China, stating that this revelation undermines China’s role as a permanent UN Security Council member and casts doubt on its commitment to peace.

In response to Zelensky’s claims, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiga, summoned China’s charge d'affaires for clarification.

Though Moscow and Beijing have yet to comment, Zelensky highlighted that this incident was part of a broader issue, mentioning North Korean fighters also supporting Russia.

He called for urgent discussions with Western partners to address the involvement of foreign nationals in the war.

US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 104 per cent tariff on Chinese imports takes effect Wednesday (9 April), sending shockwaves through global markets and escalating the US-China trade war.

The move is expected to have far-reaching effects on global markets, particularly in the tech and manufacturing sectors, with industry giants like Apple bracing for financial hits.

China has vowed to retaliate, and economists predict significant price hikes for consumers, further shaking international supply chains.

ASEAN nations, such as Indonesia, and global powers like India are already navigating the economic fallout.

As tensions rise, experts worry about the long-term economic pain both countries will endure.
