A FORMER school bus driver was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for eight years on Thursday for causing the death of her rear seat passenger through her negligence. Chan Lai Yoong, 67, had earlier admitted to causing the death of Russell Koh, eight, at the signalised junction of Yio Chu Kang and Gerald Drve on April 24 last year. She had failed to give way to an oncoming car from the opposite direction when making a right turn, resulting in the collision with the car and the boy's death. A second charge of causing hurt to a seven-year-old girl who was also seated behind, was considered during her sentencing. The court heard that while turning right into Gerald Drive that day, Chan failed to give way to an oncoming Toyota from the opposite direction. On hitting the car, the school bus spun around. The rear door flew open and Russell was flung out. He died in hospital about an hour later. The girl was also injured. Chan could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
