sillycon valley (san jose) recently reconfigured green bicycle lanes to curbside, with parking at least a lane away from curb. curbside parking used to be the norm. this is to prevent drivers from opening doors and slamming into cyclists (and cyclists onto road and oncoming traffic). this was exactly what happened in sf a week ago. a cyclist got crushed under a truck as she tried to avoid a stupid driver who opened her door without looking back and checking blind spot. sf is not there yet like in sillycon valley, but soon will copy the san jose model for avenues and roads that are wide enough. the sj model goes a few steps further by installing permanent green cones to prevent drivers from cutting into bike lane. eventually the entire city will be reconfigured for cyclists.
