This reminds me of when my daughter was a St. Xave's (Kolkata) college student ten years ago. In the lane behind the college rear gate there's a street food stall that caters mostly to the students. My daughter really liked the food, until one fateful day. A guy was wiping food plates with a cloth, and he had an oozing, pus-filled eye infection. He wiped the discharge from his eye on the cloth, then went back to wiping the plates with that same cloth. My daughter was stunned; couldn't believe what she'd just seen. Then her shock turned to horror. After that, she warned all her college friends and they also quit eating from that stall.

Jaipur: US woman buys jewellery for Rs 6 crore, later discovers it is fake and worth Rs 300

Cherish purchased the jewellery nearly two years ago. However, the truth came to light when Cherish displayed the pieces at an exhibition back home. Experts there identified the jewellery as mere imitation, worth a measly Rs 300

A US tourist visiting Jaipur has accused a jeweler of duping her into buying fake jewelry for a staggering Rs 6 crore (approximately $870,000 USD). The woman, identified as Cherish, reportedly purchased the pieces from a shop in the city's historic Johri Bazaar area in 2022.

According to police reports, Cherish purchased the jewellery nearly two years ago. The seller, a father-son duo running the shop, allegedly provided a fake authenticity certificate to assure the tourist of the pieces' value. Thrilled with her purchase, Cherish returned to the US with the jewellery.

However, the truth came to light when Cherish displayed the pieces at an exhibition back home. Experts there identified the jewellery as mere imitation, worth a measly Rs 300 (approximately USD $4).

Indian authorities bulldoze homes of 11 people after finding beef in fridges

https://sg.yahoo.com/news/indian-authorities-bulldoze-homes-11-121600381.html

Indian authorities have bulldozed the homes of 11 people in the central Madhya Pradesh state after police found beef in their refrigerators and cows in their backyards.

Slaughter of cows, which some Hindu people worship as a deity, and their progeny is banned in most of India, as is the consumption of their meat.

In Madhya Pradesh, cow slaughter is punished by seven years in jail, and the burden of proof is on the accused.

There is no legal provision to destroy the property of a person accused of cow slaughter, let alone before they have been tried.

Yet, states run by Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in particular routinely raze homes as punishment for suspected crimes such as cow slaughter and incitement to sectarian violence.

The victims are overwhelmingly Muslims. The minority religious community has long been at the receiving end of a campaign of violence by Hindu nationalist groups that accuse them of hurting religious feelings by slaughtering cows. Many Muslims have been lynched by Hindu mobs over suspicion of transporting cows for slaughter.

It is not yet clear if those whose homes have been destroyed in Madhya Pradesh are Muslim, though some reporters have identified them as such.

Man finds part of human finger in his ice cream: ‘I am traumatised’

A man from India’s Maharashtra state allegedly found a human finger in the ice cream that he had ordered online.

The 26-year-old doctor, Orlem Brandon Serrao, who lives in the suburbs of Malad in the city of Mumbai, filed a complaint with the police after discovering a piece of the human finger in his ice cream on Wednesday.

The Indian Express reported that unidentified employees of the ice cream manufacturer, Yummo Ice Cream, have been booked and further probe is on.

On Wednesday morning, Dr Serrao’s sister ordered groceries and Yummo ice cream – a brand launched in 2012 – from Zepto, an online grocery delivery service in India.

In the afternoon, Dr Serrao found a piece of flesh with a broken nail in the ice cream.

“I had ordered three cone ice creams from an app. One of them was a butterscotch ice cream from Yummo brand. After eating half of it, I felt a solid piece in my mouth. I thought it could be a nut or a chocolate piece and spat it out to check what it was,” Dr Serrao was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“I am a doctor so I know how body parts look like. When I carefully examined it, I noticed the nails and fingerprint impressions under it. It resembled a thumb. I am traumatized,” he said.

After getting no response from the manufacturer, he reported it to Malad police, reports said.

The police registered a case against an unidentified Yummo employee on charges of food adulteration and endangering human life.

Police have sent the flesh to a forensic lab to ascertain if the flesh is of a human or any animal, said an officer.

In their response to the controversy, Yummo Ice Cream was quoted as saying by MoneyControl: “We have stopped manufacturing at this third-party facility, isolated the said product at the facility and our warehouses, and are in the process of doing the same at the market level. Product quality and safety being our highest priority, we were in process to address the situation. Meanwhile, the matter was escalated, and an official police complaint was filed by the customer.”

Starving American Yoga Student Chained to Tree ‘For 40 Days’

An American woman who went to India a decade ago to study yoga and meditation has claimed she survived without food and water for 40 days after being shackled to a tree by her former husband.

U.S. citizen Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was found starving and emaciated on Saturday by a local shepherd in a remote forest in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra about 25 miles from Goa, according to reports.

The shepherd broke an iron chain that was used to secure her to the tree. Police said she was severely dehydrated and unable to speak.

Officers said Kumar met and married an Indian man while studying yoga in Tamil Nadu, the same province in southeast India where Kamala Harris’ grandfather comes from. The couple reportedly fell out and the ex-husband has now been charged with attempted murder.

According to the Indian Express, the police case is based on a letter written by the American woman, who has not yet talked about her ordeal.

“Injection for extreme psychosis which causes severe locked jaw and inability to drink any water. Need intravenous food… 40 days without food in forest—husband tied me to a tree in a forest and said I would die there,” the note read.

Police are said to be skeptical that Kumar could have survived for 40 days without food or water. ----Yindoooo Police cover up in face of proof before their eyes

“When we discovered her, she was seriously dehydrated. It appears that she was stuck there for a minimum of 48 hours. Although she was mute,” said Amol Chavan, an inspector at Sawantwadi Police Station.

“She is currently not in a position to talk. We are trying to get more details about her background,” said Saurabh Agarwal, superintendent of police in Sindhudurg, the area where she was found.

Kumar had her U.S. passport with her when she was found along with various personal belongings, including an identity card with a Tamil Nadu address. She is said to be out of danger but suffering from psychiatric issues.

Police said she had been living in India for at least 10 years and that her visa had expired.

Map shows the 10 countries dumping and burning the most plastic

metro-bs-f8b2.png

A fifth of all discarded plastic in the world is either littered or burned, new research suggests.

Academics at the University of Leeds estimate that 52.1 million tonnes of waste – enough to fill a double-decker bus more than 13 times over – becomes pollution every year.

Most of it – 57%, according to their study – is incinerated in homes, on streets or at informal dumps without proper environmental controls.

The rest (43%) is dumped in nature, such as rivers or fields, rather than being recyled or disposed of in organised landfill sites.

Most plastic pollution is produced in places where people have ‘no option but to dump or burn it’, lead author Dr Costas Velis says.

Areas where there is no access to organised waste collection services are estimated to cover some 1.5 billion people worldwide.

India tops the table when it comes to the amount of plastic pollution produced per year, with 9.3 million tonnes.

The best performers among countries which have at least several million people were Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Norway and Israel.

In India, teenage boy dies after self-styled ‘doctor’ performed gall bladder surgery guided by YouTube videos

https://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/india-teenage-boy-dies-self-050711049.html

Malay Mail
PATNA (India), Sept 9 — A 15-year-old boy has reportedly died after a fake doctor in the Bihar state in India performed a gall bladder surgery, allegedly while relying on YouTube videos for guidance.

New Delhi-based NDTV reported that the boy, Krishna Kumar, was initially admitted to the Ganpati Seva Sadan private clinic in the Saran district of Bihar due to vomiting.

"We admitted him and the vomiting stopped soon after. But the doctor Ajit Kumar Puri said he needs to be operated upon.

“He conducted the operation by watching videos on YouTube. My son died later," father Chandan Shaw was quoted saying.

The report said the boy’s condition became worse during the botched attempted operation, and the so-called “doctor” had arranged for an ambulance to rush the patient to a hospital in the state capital, Patna.

The boy however died on the way, and his body was abandoned by the “doctor” and his team who fled the scene.

The family members was reported saying they are not aware if the man actually was qualified.

"We think he was self-styled and fake," they reportedly said.

The teen’s grandfather said the “doctor” operated the boy without the family’s consent after sending the father away on an errand.

“The boy was in pain. When we asked the doctor why he was in pain, he snapped at us and asked if we were doctors.

“Later in the evening, the boy stopped breathing. He was revived [with CPR] and then rushed to Patna. He died on the way. They left the boy's body on the stairs of the hospital and fled," the grandfather Prahlad Prasad Shaw was quoted saying.

NDTV reported that a police report has been lodged and the deceased’s remain is currently under post-mortem investigation.

It also reported that those admitted in the nursing home in the Ganpati Seva Sadan have been abandoned by the staff, which have gone missing.

Filthy $6,300 first-class cabin on Air India flight exposed by viral video

https://sg.yahoo.com/style/filthy-6-300-first-class-193527593.html

A viral social media video revealed a passenger’s “nightmare” first-class experience on Air India, after he found ripped furnishings, dirt around his seat and a broken in-flight entertainment system.

Entrepreneur Anip Patel posted a video on 17 September documenting his flight from Chicago to Delhi on an Air India flight in his first-class seat that cost $6,300.

What he found when he boarded the plane for his 15-hour non-stop flight was the cabin in “poor condition”, with the seat being “unclean, with leftover food and trash still in the cabin, and everything looked worn out or broken”.

Patel described it as “the worst first-class cabin I’ve ever been on,” showing clips of dirt and hair within the “gross” plug socket compartment.

“There were things moving in every compartment; everything was ripped, ruined or had mildew on it. I understand regular wear and tear, but this was next level,” Patel said in the video.

He also took close-up clips of stains and rips on the cabin furnishings, adding that “everything was broken” and said tape had been used to secure things in place.

Patel was also offered headphones for his seat, but once opened, he claimed they were untangled and had mildew on them.

Patel also claimed that there was also no wifi within the cabin and his in-flight entertainment system was not working, despite the flight attendant coming back four or five times to try and restart it.

Patel said he “raw-dogged” the entire 15-hour flight without internet access or entertainment.

The passenger also showed a clip of the onboard menu, which he said at first looked “very promising,” only to then find out that 30 per cent of the food items were unavailable, he claimed.

While there were only four passengers in first class, he said that the lack of food items meant that the menu ended up being first-come, first-served.

Despite the issues he had with the menu, Patel did admit that the soup he received was delicious and was the “only good thing on the flight,” and that the pyjamas and skincare that were provided were decent. ---- lol

After posting the clips of his first-class flight with Air India, the video went viral on social media, amassing millions of views across different platforms.

Patel later added that after the video gained online traction, Air India gave him a full refund for his first-class seat.

“I did not file any complaint with Air India but through social media they saw this video – they called me today and refunded my entire flight they did make it right and it’s worth noting,” he wrote.

Patel’s viral video was posted the same day Air India announced it would start a $400m refurb of their 67 legacy aircraft in its fleet.

The revamp will include new seats, carpets, curtains, and upholstery in its 27 narrowbody Airbust A320neo aircraft, followed by its 40 widebody Boeing aircraft.

India states' plans to punish spitting in food spark controversy

This month, two states ruled by India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced plans to impose hefty fines and imprisonment for contaminating food with spit, urine and dirt.

The northern state of Uttarakhand will fine offenders up to 100,000 rupees ($1,190; £920), while neighbouring Uttar Pradesh is set to introduce stringent laws to address the issue.

The government directives followed the circulation of unverified videos on social media showing vendors spitting on food at local stalls and restaurants - and one video depicting a house-help mixing urine into food she was preparing.

While the videos sparked outrage among users, with many expressing concern about food safety in these states, some of the videos also became the subject of blame campaigns targeting Muslims, which were later debunked by fact-checking websites.

They pointed out that many on social media had alleged that the woman adding urine to food was Muslim, but police later identified her as a Hindu.

Officials say strict laws are necessary and are aimed at deterring people from indulging in unhygienic practices around food, but opposition leaders and legal experts have questioned the efficacy of these laws and allege that they could also be misused to vilify a specific community.

The Indian Express newspaper criticised the ordinances proposed by Uttar Pradesh state, saying that they "act as a communal [sectarian] dog whistle that preys on the majority’s notions of purity and pollution and targets an already insecure minority".

Food and food habits are sensitive subjects in culturally-diverse India as they are deeply intertwined with religion and the country's hierarchical caste system. Norms and taboos around food sometimes lead to clashes between communities, sparking feelings of distrust. Consequently, the notion of "food safety" has also become entangled with religion, which is sometimes used to ascribe motive to alleged incidents of contamination.

Experts cite various reasons for poor food safety in India, including inadequate enforcement of food safety laws and a lack of awareness. Cramped kitchens, dirty utensils, contaminated water, and improper transport and storage practices further compromise food safety.

Food safety is also a major concern in India, with the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) estimating that unsafe food causes around 600 million infections and 400,000 deaths annually.
