SINGAPORE: A female foreigner is in police custody after she was caught pickpocketing shoppers at Chinatown's Lunar New Year bazaar.
At about 3.20pm on Wednesday, officers from the Central Police Division, who were on rounds, spotted the woman reaching into another woman's handbag while using her scarf to shield her right hand.
She then tried to make a getaway but was intercepted by the police. The police found a red packet containing religious cards and S$217 worth of cash belonging to the 72-year-old victim.
Four ez-link cards were also found but could not be accounted for by the suspect.
The 50-year-old suspect, who is believed to be an illegal immigrant, will be charged in court on Friday.
Members of the public are reminded to be vigilant during the festive season.
They are advised to be mindful of their personal belongings when shopping and to be wary of strangers who follow them too closely.
