After Losing Dad and Grandma to COVID-19, Korean Siblings Now Lose Mom

COVID-19
After losing their father and grandmother to COVID-19, Hannah Hei Kim, 22, and her brother Joseph, 17, are now mourning the passing of their mother, Eun Jo, who succumbed to lung complications caused by the virus.

A Family Tragedy

The Kim family’s struggles started when their grandmother Sun Soon contracted COVID-19 from a nursing home and their father Timothy got it from one of his acupuncture patients. On April 27, their grandmother was admitted to the hospital, and their father and mother shortly afterward. Hannah and Joseph both also tested positive for COVID-19 and were isolated.

On May 21, their father passed away, just days after their grandmother’s death. Eun-Ju was released on May 29 after testing negative for COVID-19. She was starting to get better when her health suddenly deteriorated as her oxygen levels plummeted again.

As NextShark previously reported, Eun Jo was considered for a lung transplant and moved to Keck Medical Center of USC. However, the doctors decided against the operation.

“After initial evaluations, doctors told us that my mom unfortunately wouldn’t make it out alive if she were to get the surgery,” she recently wrote on her Instagram account. “Her lungs were hardening because of tissue damage from COVID-19 even though she was declared negative a month ago.”

Painful Update
Hannah then announced her mother’s death. She was 60 years old.

“On July 14th, my mother passed away. The ventilator was her life support and her body couldn’t keep up. It seriously pains me to write this update, especially because so many of you have been rooting for her.”

While dealing with the heavy losses, the siblings are also facing eviction from their new landlord, who plans to demolish their building.

Hannah’s latest Instagram post garnered outpouring support and messages of condolences. She thanked everyone for their sweet messages and asked for time and space to take care of their family matters.
