SINGAPORE : Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Boon Heng has said that he will retire from politics.
He said this on Sunday at a community event in Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC), which he helms.
Mr Lim said Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will take over him in leading the ruling party's team at the General Election.
Just recently, Mr Lim introduced the People's Action Party's (PAP) fresh faces in his capacity as chairman.
They included Tin Pei Ling, the PAP's youngest candidate so far for the coming General Election.
It was perhaps a precursor to the 63-year-old veteran's retirement from politics, allowing his Cabinet colleague to take the lead.
Mr Tharman said: "Frankly, I couldn't have hoped for a better mentor. He has been very important to me personally, the last 10 years (with his) quiet guidance, very often an unseen guidance, giving me tips here and there. And giving each of us the autonomy to run our wards well."
Ang Wei Neng, a potential candidate for the PAP, said: "Although he is a Minister, he has a lot of portfolios to handle, but he makes a point to visit the constituency very often, a few times a week sometimes. And he is very humble; (he) mixes around with residents and a lot of residents respect him. So this is something I have to learn. It is a big shoe to fill."
Mr Lim was elected Member of Parliament for Kebun Baru in 1980.
Having served seven terms since, he rose through the ranks to be part of the core team leading Singapore.
Mr Lim was appointed Minister in charge of Ageing Issues in 2007.
He also played a pivotal role in shaping the labour movement.
Mr Lim held posts like deputy director, assistant secretary-general and finally secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
He was known for his belief that "the best welfare for a worker is a job".
Commenting on what is next on the cards, Mr Lim said: "A bit of gardening..planting some orchids in my garden and things which I have long neglected. I used to work on a farm, but lost my green touch. So I hope that some of these hobbies I enjoy doing I will be able to do, and therefore in that sense, spend a bit more time with my family."
Mr Lim said he will also continue serving in the People's Association and the NTUC.
