SINGAPORE: A nationalised public transport system can result in inefficiencies and a drop in service levels, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua.
Mrs Lim was commenting on the proposal on transport as set out in the Workers' Party manifesto, when speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event Friday evening.
"I presume the underlying motivation for nationalisation is because it's cheap. But nationalising in a lot of other countries has led to inefficiencies. Ultimately, you get cheap transport but it doesn't quite work out for the residents," said Mrs Lim.
She added that the government has considered the idea, but found it not feasible ultimately.
Mrs Lim, who is also an MP for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency, was asked about the contest she would be facing in the upcoming general election.
The Workers' Party - which also contested Aljunied in 2006 and took 43.91 per cent of votes - has indicated that it will be back with its "A" team.
"We don't presume that the voter's vote or resident's vote is secured. We work very hard for every vote, we work very hard regardless of who the opposition is," said Mrs Lim.
Mrs Lim was speaking to residents at a dialogue session over the possible privatisation of Serangoon North HUDC.
The estate is currently short of just three signatures to reach the minimum 75 per cent needed for the proposal to go through.
Mrs Lim added that she has advised residents not to harrass those who have yet to give their consent.
