Hawker cry foul over steep cleaning fees hike !
National Environment Agency (NEA) will be increasing the cleaning fees at 9 hawker centres from next week.
At least three groups of hawkers have spoken out against the move by NEA.
At the Holland Village Market and Food Centre, the cleaning fees charged to stallholders will increase by 156% from $240 to $614 a month.
Mr Michael Shee, who runs a stall at Holland Village, said, “At the end of the day, it’s the consumer who has to pay the price.”
Another hawker centre facing similar fee hikes is the Commonwealth Crescent Market.
Hawkers at these 2 centres have approached their MP Chan Chun Sing for help.
At Tanglin Halt Market, monthly fees will jump 79% from $268 to $480 and at Maxwell Food Centre, it will be 92% from $260 to $500.
Other affected hawker centres include Adam Food Centre, Geylang Serai Market and Newton Food Centre.
The 9 affected hawker centres all come under a single contract with cleaning contractor Clean Solutions.
Hawkers at other centres with different cleaning contracts are said to be paying only between $200 and $300 a month.
A quick check on the Internet reveals that the executive director of Clean Solutions is a person by the name of Tan Hang Kian [Link]. Subsequent checks also reveal that there is another person called Tan Hang Kian who is a grassroots leader and Vice-Chairman of the Siglap Citizens’ Consultative Committee [Link]. It is unclear if they are the same person.
Meanwhile, an NEA spokesman has replied to media enquiry, saying that the new rates were mainly due to higher wages for cleaners and training costs by cleaning contractors. She said the increased costs were “fair and representative of market rates for such services”.
However, NEA acknowledged that the hawkers were not consulted over the new contracts.
NEA manages 107 hawker centres and markets and hires cleaning contractors to clean them.
It is strange that NEA is hiring the contractors when it is the hawkers who are paying for the cleaning service. Perhaps the hawker centres should just by-pass NEA and go ahead to hire the cleaning contractors themselves.
