SINGAPORE — The harsh terrain, and a full-time national serviceman's decision to position a "significant portion of his body" outside the military vehicle he was commanding were among the factors that led to his death during a military exercise in Australia last September.

Third Sergeant (3SG) Gavin Chan, 21, a vehicle commander from the 41st Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment (SAR), had died after the Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle he was guiding out of difficult terrain — dotted with a steep incline and boulders — overturned.

Addressing the House on Thursday (May 17) in his ministerial statement on recent training-related deaths in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen released detailed findings on the death of the serviceman during Exercise Wallaby at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland.

Noting that all investigative processes have been completed, including those by the Queensland authorities, Dr Ng said 3SG Chan died as a result of multiple injuries sustained due to motor vehicle trauma.

This is just complete MINDEF cover up bullshit. No Vehicle commander will command his vehicle as per what Bargain Hen says the TSR should be, i.e. with only head and shoulder sticking out. In Armour we were trained by the IDF, and their policy was to make sure the VC had as much situational awareness as possible. That means u stick your body out of the turret as far as u can, and scan your surrounding. The IDF VCs had the highest casualty rate among the tank crews because of this. I can say that if I had to maneuvre my tank out of very harsh terrain at night, I would be doing the same thing too. U have to stick your body out as far as possible to see where all the rocks and hang up is. In this case, there is a vehicle overturn drill, but I guess he could not get his body back in time into the turret or the overturn was very sudden. Better to blame the overturn on a design flaw of the Bionix. i.e. Its too damn tall. As u can see from these pics, standard SAF practice is not what Bargain Hen says. Every VC is sticking more then just their head and shoulder out of the turret.

The SAF has always been an offensive force. For decades we have been conducting amphibious assault exercises every year. For what? To attack our own east coast beaches? Jungle training in Temburong, where our only jungle area is Mac Reservoir. The PAP has some secret defence arrangement to save the Sultan of Brunei's ass. So, we will be send there to rescue that fucker if he is being overthrown.
