A FORMER postman who allegedly filched credit cards from mail he was delivering was arrested on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Malaysian man is said to be responsible for a spate of at least 15 credit card thefts and for the unauthorised spending on the cards.

The Straits Times understands that the suspect had charged about RM60,000 (S$24,400) on items such as television sets, home theatre systems and car accessories.

He was nabbed in Johor Baru by the Royal Malaysian Police on Wednesday and then extradited to Singapore.
Fifteen people here had fallen victim to his alleged thefts since February this year.

Since then, police here have received several reports of unauthorised credit card transactions made in Malaysia.

The Singapore victims found out about the transactions when they received alerts from their banks. Each time, the transactions were made using either new or replacement credit cards that the victims were supposed to receive in the mail.

Following the reports, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted investigations and managed to establish the suspect's identity.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he was previously employed as a postman and was believed to have stolen the credit cards from undelivered mail.

A FORMER postman was on Friday, jailed for six months for stealing mail containing credit cards.

Malaysian Mohd Riduan Abdul Salam, 23, admitted to five charges of theft from his employer, SingPost, in May 2011.

Another eight similar charges were taken into consideration.

The court heard that Riduan stole mail with credit cards from the shelf of the sorting room at SingPost's Woodlands Delivery Base and hid them in his shirt pocket.

He then brought them home to Johor Baru and used the cards to make fraudulent purchases of petrol, a television set, home theatre system and sports tyres, among other things.

He could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined on each charge.
