KUALA LUMPUR - A woman found out the hard way not to trust her lover's sweet nothings when instead of leaving his wife for her, the man threatened to post her nude pictures online if she did not pay him RM50,000 (S$20,000).
The woman, known only as Tan, said her ex-boyfriend, a 34-year-old salesman, had over 20 nude photographs of her and two video clips of them engaging in sex.
Tan, a 30-year-old teacher, said she started a relationship with the man, known as Lai, three years ago after meeting him through friends.
"I only found out he was married with a five-year-old daughter after we dated for a few months," she said at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department here yesterday.
Tan claimed that Lai had initially told her he was separated from his wife and had promised to divorce his wife for her.
"When he did not keep his word, I asked to end the relationship but he threatened to commit suicide.
"Finally, I broke off the relationship on Dec 3 but he tried to extort RM50,000 from me saying he would expose my nude pictures and video clips online," she said, adding that Lai had used his handphone and camera to record the images.
"I want to warn all women to be brave and not to blindly trust men and their sweet words.
"We must learn to protect ourselves," she said.
Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said he was in the midst of consulting with his lawyer on the next best step for Tan.
"The modus operandi of perpetrators in such cases is to tell their lovers that they want to take their nude pictures to record the art of love-making. Other excuses include appreciating their lovers' beautiful bodies," he said.
Chong said that so far this year, he had received 21 cases of revenge after break-ups, with six cases involving nude pictures or sex videos.
"While most victims are women aged between 20 and 38, four of them were men," he said.
He added that other forms of harassment included character attacks on Facebook and threatening phone calls and letters by spurned lovers.
