A FORMER clerk-of-works was charged in court on Friday with corruption and attempted corruption. Low Soon Chong, 58, was employed by Sentosa Leisure Management when he allegedly tried to get a bribe in the form of unspecified sub-contract work from Mr Yak Tze Howe, a project manager of Meng Yeow Construction, in return for being lenient in his supervision of work done by the contractor on Aug 21 last year. Now unemployed, he was then responsible for the supervision and inspection of construction work undertaken by contractors at Sentosa Island. About a month later, he allegedly accepted a $10,000 bribe from Mr Richard Joseph Cheng Tim Leck, a project director of Meng Yeow, to be lenient. The alleged offence took place in the men's toilet at HarbourFront Centre on Sept 18. Low, who was represented by Mr Andy Yeo, can be fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years if convicted on each of the two charges. He is out on a $30,000 police bail. The case has been fixed for a pre-trial conference on Nov 5.
