MS ESTHER CHEN HANFANG: 'Thursday's report ('Help, jobless foreign workers cry') was particularly unsettling as I read about the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) officer's response to the workers who had approached the agency hoping for answers and help. It appears that the MOM was uncertain whether these foreigners were gainfully employed before issuing their work permits. MOM added to their distress by telling them to approach the ministry only if they were unpaid. What exactly does MOM tell officers to say to foreign workers in such circumstances and how are such matters handled? How do we expect foreigners to return home and tell their families and friends that we are a kind and gracious nation?'
