SINGAPORE: The Romanian embassy’s charge d’affaires, who’s suspected to be involved in a tragic hit—and—run accident, could be back to his post in Singapore in late January. Dr Silviu Ionescu told a Romanian news website that he returned to Bucharest after the incident for some medical examinations which had been scheduled in advance. The 49—year—old diplomat also stressed he had no connection with the accident, and hopes the perpetrator is found as soon as possible. On 15 December 2009, the embassy’s car, a black Audi A6, hit three pedestrians at about 3.10 am in Bukit Panjang. At 3.50am, Dr Ionescu filed a police report saying his vehicle had been stolen. One victim, 30—year—old Tong Kok Wai, suffered severe brain damage and died on Christmas day. His friend, 24—year—old Bong Hwee Haw is still recovering in hospital, while the third victim who suffered leg and neck injuries has been discharged. Police said investigations are still ongoing and would not rule out any suspect in the course of its investigations. — CNA/vm

AN ONLINE petition has been set up calling on the Romanian government and its embassy here to cooperate with the Singapore authorities to investigate a recent hit-and-run accident which left one man dead. The petition also called for payouts to be made to the families of the three victims of the Dec 15 incident. There were 269 signatures at press time last night. Research engineer William Teo, 31, who was the fifth person to sign the petition, told The Sunday Times: 'There is a need for the common Singaporean to express outrage at the entire incident to put pressure on parties on both sides. At times, things can get too clinical if we leave it merely to the respective governments.' The petition, first signed by a Mr Terence Sim, also called for Dr Silviu Ionescu, the charge d'affaires at the Romanian Embassy and a suspect in the incident, to be handed over to the authorities here if he is found to be responsible. He is believed to be in Romania.

Romanians living here said they were shocked and outraged when they read that the driver of a car belonging to the Romanian Embassy had hit three pedestrians at two traffic junctions in Bukit Panjang, and fled. They were also troubled that two weeks later, several Romanians made the news for making unauthorised withdrawals from ATMs using counterfeit ATM cards. Romanians told The Sunday Times yesterday they were concerned these incidents would paint their people in a bad light. This is especially as many people here do not appear to know much about their community or country, said Mrs Mariella Chen, 54, who is married to a Malaysian Chinese and is an English lecturer at a private school.

EMBASSY CAR CRASH
Woman was in Audi

Romanian envoy says he'll be back by end-Jan

By Teh Joo Lin

THE Romanian diplomat linked to a hit-and-run case was spotted in a car with an Asian woman less than an hour before the accident on Dec 15. The Straits Times understands he is believed to have dropped off a woman, said to be a Korean national, at her home in Bukit Timah at about 2.30am. About 40 minutes later, the embassy car, a black Audi A6, hit three men in Bukit Panjang and then sped off. One of them has since died. Yesterday, an eyewitness claimed he saw Romanian charge d'affaires Silviu Ionescu leaving Peace Centre in Selegie with a woman in an Audi A6 that morning. The 49-year-old man told Lianhe Wanbao that the embassy car, sporting diplomatic plates, had pulled up to his left at a traffic junction. The long-haired passenger in a white dress, who looked to be in her 20s, was quarrelling with Dr Ionescu, he claimed. The altercation was so serious that the Audi did not budge even when the lights turned green. Only after the cars behind had sounded their horns for almost a minute did the vehicle speed off in the direction of Bukit Timah, he added. Dr Ionescu, 49, earlier told reporters he had visited a karaoke lounge in Peace Centre to meet some businessmen, and that he was back at the embassy by about 1.30am to do some work after that.

Why-the-fark is romania having an embassy here??? That's a goddamned useless warsaw cuntry this side of the corrupt east european bloc whose best exports continue to be women trafficking, methamphetamines & porn.

High time we stopped doing uncle sam's bidding & get his own bloody spies to spy on these pathetic ex-warsaw cuntries, without using our land.

That's not entirely true, the Romania do exile in gymnastics and winter sports at international levels. And they have a pretty good soccer team with famous players like Gheorghe Hagi, Adrian Mutu and Cristian Chivu. And plus Romania happens also to be the native residence of the world renown Bran Castle, refuge of the legendary Count Dracula!

Even Ethiopia's a few super marathoners, but that alone doesn't help it escape its reputation for famine & devastating HIV infections.
Like I said, romania's noteworthy for their other "exports".

Human Trafficking & Modern-day Slavery
Romania is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor. Romanian men, women, and children are trafficked to Spain, Italy, Greece, the Czech Republic, and Germany for commercial sexual exploitation, forced begging, and forced labor in the agriculture, construction, and service sectors.

More here.

romania's a thru-and-thru quasi-angmo shithole and the veritable crapper of east europe as it were. Is it any wonder why their "elite" society members like this stinking hit-and-run crim of a "diplomat" is so low-rent?

Embassy car crash
Probe will be 'thorough'

Foreign Minister George Yeo said the Romanian Embassy is helping police in the probe, and there is a due process to handle the matter. -- PHOTO: SHIN MIN

THE police are carrying out "very thorough" investigations into the hit-and-run accident linked to a Romanian diplomat, said Foreign Minister George Yeo on Monday. Speaking to reporters at the Indonesian Embassy after signing the condolence book for former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, who died last week, Mr Yeo said: "What happened was very bad. A man was killed. People were injured. The police are pursuing the matter very thoroughly but investigations are still ongoing and I shall not be commenting on them." Asked when would the matter be resolved as it has been over two weeks since the accident happened on Dec 15, Mr Yeo said: "The Police are not sitting on their hands." He said the Romanian Embassy is helping police in the probe, and there is a due process to handle the matter.

It has been established that the charge d'affairs of the Romanian Embassy here, Dr Silviu Ionescu. 49, was involved in the hit-and-run accident in Bukit Panjang, which injured three men, one of whom died on Christmas Day without regaining consciousness. The car, with its windscreen cracked, was later found abandoned in front of an office building in Sungei Kadut. Dr Silviu Ionescu, 49, returned to Romania a few days after the accident. He told a Romanian tabloid, Click!, he would return to Singapore this month. An online petition has been set up calling on the Romanian government and its embassy here to cooperate with the Singapore authorities. It also called for payouts to be made to the families of the three victims.
