Tue, Apr 19, 2011 AsiaOne Former lawyer, Tan Cheng Yew, who was on the run for six years after he misappropriated a client's funds, was handed a nine-year jail term for criminal breach of trust and cheating to the tune of $4.8 million on Monday. The Straits Times reported that the one-time star debater at the National University of Singapore law faculty was convicted of misappropriating $1.5 million and $1.9 million from five members of a Tan family. Tan, who is not related to the family, had advised his clients to place the sum of $1.5 million under his firm's trust. But he deposited the sum into his own DBS acount and pledged the amount as security for a personal loan which he later took from DBS. He was also guilty of cheating a Mr Tommy Tan Kwee Khoon, part of the same family, of $480,000 and $900,000 in 2002, which he had intended to use to settle gambling debts. However the prosecution insisted that the he committed the offences as the family lawyer and abused their trust by converting large sums of money for his personal use. Tan's lawyer read a mitigation plea in court on Monday that moved his client to tears. The one paged plea was written by four of his former classmates from National University of Singapore (NUS) law school: Senior Counsel Hri Kumar Nair, Senior Counsel Harpreet Singh Nehal, Mr Adrian Tan and Mr Tony Yeo. The Straits Times reported that Mr Nair and Mr Nehal were in court. It also quoted the letter stating that Tan's classmates had known him as a model law student who was very bright, diligent and had helped classmates with their work. The plea also mentioned that the offences Tan has been found guilty of are 'clearly acts for which he should be punished' and that Tan also accepts he should be punished. However, they also pointed out that Tan, spent considerable time and money helping needy children at The Haven run by the Salvation Army. They said it was painful to see his promising future destroyed. They felt that with the right support, he could be rehabilitated. 'We ask that his journey back into society be allowed to begin sooner, rather than later.' Tan comes from a family of lawyers; his older brother Professor Tan Cheng Han is the dean of the law faculty at NUS and a Senior Counsel, while is father Mr Tan Hock Kim, 85, who was in court yesterday, is a retired lawyer. He could have been jailed for up to 10 years for criminal breach of trust and up to seven years for cheating. An excerpt from the plea: "...none of us will ever be able to fathom the fear and extreme desperation which would have caused him to walk away from the only life he knew, his family and all the people who were dear to him "Cheng Yew has already borne not inconsiderable punishment for his conduct - being away from his aged parents for years and having to live with the daily knowledge of the shame he has brought on his family. The shame and pain can never be eradicated." |

Tan Cheng Yew is a PR. His PR status was revoked after his release from prison 2 years ago. He's now back in JB working for a big company as their head of legal or something. That company is his ex-client. And he's earning at least $20K+ every month in Sing Dollars. He's a survivor and very talented. Senior Counsel calibre.
I don’t quite believe this , that TOP Lawyers in the land of Bolehland earns $20 k or 60 k ringgit monthly , I myself know some TOP notch legal eagle in KL , that’s where the money is not in JB , I am quite certain about thisTan Cheng Yew is a PR. but most of these high powered Lawyers in bolehland are either an Indian or a Malay , very very seldom a chinese
but one thing for sure Lawyers in bolehland never made money because of their caliber but through their connections
Okie , anything can indeed happen ,! And so be itThe company is a Singapore company. He is just stationed in Bolehland and works from there. He's paid his salary in Sing $. Nothing wrong with that.
