Gillian: My secret romance with Edison
Hong Kong - Singer-actress Gillian Chung said it was love at first sight when she met actor Edison Chen, who eventually landed her in a sex photo scandal last year.

They met through a friend before her pop career began in 2000 and were together 'on and off for four to five years', she admitted on TVB talk show Be My Guest.

Her Twins singing partner, Charlene Choi, had warned her that he was a bad guy but she did not listen, she said.

The revelations about her secret relationship with the actor came from her interview with TVB general manager Stephen Chan, which aired last Saturday.

After a year out of the spotlight, she did the interview last Thursday at the Repulse Bay mansion of her Emperor Entertainment Group boss Albert Yeung, as part of a comeback bid.

She will face the media tomorrow, at a press conference for fashion chain Bauhaus' Tough Jeansmith. She said she would focus on fashion and film for now, and there were no plans yet for her to sing.

When asked if Chen, 28, was the one she had dated for the longest time, Chung, also 28, said he was the one she 'liked most'.

She said of their on-off romance: 'Usually, when I was with him, there was no one else because he had a profound influence on me... When I was with him, it was hard for me to commit to another relationship.'

She added that he would sweet-talk her, for example, over SMS. 'Even one message and I would be so happy.'

At the host's prompting, she said she agreed to have the sex photos taken as she did not want to lose him. She asked him why he wanted to take the photos and he said they were for his own viewing pleasure.

But she was worried even before the photos were taken, she added.

'I could not stop asking him, will you be careful about keeping them? How will you do it? He said, 'Relax, I am going to be in the photos too, so nobody is going to see them.' '

After the photos - including those of celebrities such as actress Cecilia Cheung - were released on the Internet last year, Chung was the first victim to make a public statement.

Seemingly composed and smiling, she said she had been 'very naive and very silly', words which were criticised and ridiculed.

Some said her response was in contrast to her tearful reaction to being secretly photographed while changing her clothes in Genting Highlands.

'I was angry. I felt that I had been raped,' she said of the Malaysia photos.

As for the sex photos, 'it was unfortunate they were leaked. There is a big difference between voluntary and invo- luntary actions'.

She also explained what she had meant by her 'very naive and very silly' remark.

'When two people are dating, who hasn't been naive and silly? Love pulls the wool over a person's eyes. I definitely didn't say I was naive and silly because of the photos I had taken.'

She said she thought of killing herself and quitting showbiz. But she chose to continue for her family.

'I am in this business for my family. I want to give them a better life. So I don't want to give up just like that,' she said, referring to her sister, mother and grandparents.

She noted that as one half of the girl group Twins, 'our market was children'. But she said neither she nor her management had planned her girl- next-door image, which was shattered by the scandal last year.

The scandal 'was so long ago and all I hope is that people can at least give me some dignity', she said.

Preview clips of the interview were aired on TVB last Thursday night and there were 215 complaints against her lodged with the Broadcasting Authority. According to Apple Daily, TVB received 69 complaints and 80 supportive messages.

Computer technician Sze Ho Chun is to be tried in April for his alleged role in leaking the photos.

There was a plan to ask four of the women involved in the scandal to testify but his defence lawyer has withdrawn the application, said the South China Morning Post.

EDISON CHEN'S 'LAST CHANCE' IN S'PORE BULLET
Stamps with 'sinister' meaning QING MING DEADLINE
BULLET
Letter threat

HEAVY SECURITY: Edison (centre) at the launch of a Carl's Jr's burger in Singapore. TNP PICTURE: CHOO CHWEE HUA

THE attacks against Hong Kong star Edison Chen have taken a sinister twist wth a threat against his life.

And it makes direct reference to the Chinese-Canadian actor-singer's recent appearance in Singapore, his first official media event since his sex photos scandal broke in January last year.

The anonymous threat implied that Edison could have been harmed in Singapore, but that he had been given a last chance to stop making public appearances.

The star of films such as the Infernal Affairs trilogy and Gen-Y Cops faced vitriolic online attacks after explicit pictures of him with several female Hong Kong celebrities surfaced on the Internet.

Two former lovers - Cecilia Cheung and Gillian Chung - recently slammed him in television interviews for entangling them in the scandal.

But the latest attack is more ominous - the death threat is accompanied by what looked like a 9mm bullet.

It arrived in an inconspicuous A4-sized envelope sent to the Hong Kong i-Cable TV office in Tsuen Wan at about 5pm on Wednesday. Inside was a white envelope that contained a letter and the bullet. Hong Kong's Apple Daily also received a similar letter with a bullet yesterday afternoon.

The letter to i-Cable TV, written in English, warned Edison to stop all public appearances and promotional events.

The deadline issued to him was 4 Apr, which coincidentally marks the start of the month-long Qing Ming Festival - an annual rite when the Chinese pay respects to their ancestors.

Edison was told to take this final warning seriously, or his personal safety would be threatened.

The letter made references to his media appearance in Singapore last month, saying that he had been given a reprieve while he was here. It then warned him that no second chance would be given if he persisted in making public appearances.

He was in Singapore to launch Carl's Jr's Angus Beef Thickburger at the Bang & Olufsen boutique in Grand Hyatt Hotel. He later turned up at an Adidas Originals event at the Timberlux Warehouse on Havelock Road.

On the same day, i-Cable Entertainment News in Hong Kong aired an interview with Cecilia, in which she tearfully called him a hypocrite. She said he had yet to apologise to the women whose nude pictures were circulated on the Internet.

In an interview with Hong Kong TVB aired last Saturday, Gillian said she had also not heard from Edison since the incident.

At a press briefing hours after the document was received, a spokesman for i-Cable TV said the return address on the envelope was 'Pennsylvania' in the US.

The document, which was not postmarked, was also affixed with 10 stamps marked USA First Class Forever. Some Hong Kong reports said that Liberty Bell stamps alluded to 'giving a bell' which sounds the same as sending off the dead in Chinese.

Soon after the cable network called the police, officers from the Organised Crime & Triad Bureau and Forensic Firearms Examination Bureau went to the scene.

Apple Daily has also made a police report.

A Hong Kong police spokesman told The New Paper: 'We have classified the case as 'bullet found' and our special crime squad will continue with the investigations.'

Edison's management company, East Asia Entertainment, told the Hong Kong media that it was shocked to learn about the letter but declined further comment as it was now a police matter.

Edison has yet to comment on the issue, but it seemed that his personal safety was not a concern when he was in Singapore.

Both event organisers had engaged the services of Event Security Specialists to ensure order during Edison's stay here from 27Feb to 1 Mar. Its managing director, Mr Lim Liang Meng, told The New Paper: 'The priority of the security entourage was to ensure order in case there are overzealous fans.

'Singapore is a safe place, and we did not receive any threats, we were not too worried.'

Security officers were deployed on three different occasions: Six for his arrival at the airport, 10 at the Carl's Jr. event which was classified as a 'private corporate function' and 30 at the 'public' Adidas event.

Mr Lim added: 'If Edison visits Singapore again, and we're called to protect him, the security level will be increased.'

He did not dismiss the possibility of 'engaging armed guards due to the threat level'.

Ms Josephine Tan, of Aspac F&B Pte Ltd (Carl's Jr), told The New Paper: 'Edison did not have security personnel accompanying him during his personal time. He probably wanted his privacy.'

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose Lee told reporters that Hong Kong is still governed by the rule of law.

He added: 'No violence or intimidating act will be tolerated.'

It was not the first time that Edison had been threatened. After a press conference last year, in which he declared he had failed as a role model and announced he was quitting showbiz, he received a threatening phone call. He reported the matter to the police.

It was also one of the reasons that he refused to return to Hong Kong for the trial over his leaked sex photos.

Instead, he gave evidence at a closed-door hearing of the case in Vancouver, where he now lives, on 23 Feb. The trial of computer technician Sze Ho Chun, who has been accused of stealing the pictures, is expected to begin in Hong Kong on 6 Apr.

Twists and turns of sex photos scandal
March 14, 2009

THE Edison Chen saga could easily translate into a box-office blockbuster. Here's how it started:

January 2008

Photo of Edison and Gillian Chung in bed appears on Internet. More lewd photos of Edison and female starlets like Cecilia Cheung, Bobo Chan, Rachel Ngan and then-girlfriend Vincy Yeung are posted online.

4 Feb

Police arrest computer technician Sze Ho Chun, then 23, who's alleged to have copied photos from Edison's laptop when it was sent for repair in 2006.

21 Feb

Edison announces he'll quit Hong Kong showbiz, goes into self-exile.

12 Feb, 2009

Sze charged in Hong Kong with three counts of obtaining access to a computer with illegal intent.

23 Feb

Edison tells closed-door hearing in Vancouver that pictures were 'never meant for anyone else to see'. He also confirms the women's identities.

27 Feb

Tearful Cecilia opens up for first time in i-Cable TV interview on how scandal had affected her and calls Edison a liar and a hypocrite. On same day, Edison makes first official media appearance since self-exile - in Singapore. He launches Carl's Jr.'s new Angus Beef Thickburger and also attends an Adidas Originals event.

4 Mar

i-Cable cans second part of Cecilia's interview 'based on respect and to protect' her. Hong Kong media speculate she plans to sue Edison for HK$10 million ($2m), for failing to safeguard her nude pictures.

6 Mar

Gillian films first interview on TVB's Be My Guest, to be aired the next day. A segment is shown on 6.30pm news slot and infotainment programme. Immediately after, Hong Kong Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority receives 215 complaints from public. Viewers also call TVB to express disgust with Gillian, whom they said is a bad influence on the young.

7 Mar

In the full interview, Gillian says Edison had been stringing her along on and off for nearly five years, since she launched her showbiz career in 2000. She also describes him as her greatest love, and says she allowed him to take the photos because she did not want to lose him.

Viewers in Singapore can catch Gillian Chung's interview on Be My Guest this Sunday on TVBJ (StarHub Ch48) at 9pm.

Edison: I'll come to S'pore again

The Hong Kong sex scandal star, Edison Chen, has a message to the world: I am not afraid.

Commenting on a threat made to his life yesterday, the 28-year-old said he will still come to Singapore on April 6 to promote his new movie, Sniper, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Last evening, Hong Kong television station Cable TV received an anonymous letter packaged together with a gold bullet. The letter warned Edison to stay away from all promotional activities from April 4 if he valued his life.

This is the second time that Edison has received a threat on his life.

Last year, when the sex photos of Edison and several female stars came out into the open, the Hong Kong triads allegedly offered a $110,000 (HK$500,000) reward for Edison's right hand.

Although Edison remains unfazed by the threats, Sniper's distributor, Media Asia Distribution, is taking a more careful approach.

A spokesperson from the movie company said it wanted to seek the advice of both the Hong Kong and Singapore Police Forces before deciding if Edison should proceed with the promotional activities.

Answering queries on their feelings towards Edison's safety, the spokesperson said: "Edison did make a mistake (about the photos), but he does not deserve death."

HK actor says he will return to S'pore in April

WHAT a big joke.

That was Edison Chen's nonchalant reaction to the anonymous threats against his life.

And he indicated that he would not be cowed into cancelling his public appearances by saying he would be coming to Singapore next month, as planned.

Two A4-sized envelopes were sent to the Hong Kong i-Cable TV office and Next Media, which publishes the Apple Daily newspaper, on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Inside each envelope was a note addressed to Edison with a veiled threat against his life and a 9mm bullet.

The note warned the 28-year-old actor-singer to stop all public appearances and promotional events by 4 Apr.

It said Edison had been given a last chance during his media appearance in Singapore last month.

If he did not take this 'final warning' seriously, his personal safety and that of his loved ones would be threatened.

Mr Peter Lum, who heads Media Asia Group, which manages Edison and is distributing his upcoming film The Sniper, said the actor had been informed of the threat, reported Hong Kong newspaper The Sun.

After an initial reaction of 'what should we do?', Edison did not seem too worried, he said.

Full confidence

Edison expressed 'full confidence in the capabilities of the Hong Kong police force' and he felt the sender of the letters was 'making an attempt to challenge the country's legal system', Mr Lum added.

The defiant actor also said he would be heading to Singapore on 6 Apr to promote The Sniper.

This is not the first time Edison has faced such threats. After his sex photo scandal broke last year, an anonymous person allegedly offered HK$500,000 ($110,000) for his right hand.

After explicit pictures of him with several female Hong Kong celebrities surfaced on the Internet, Edison's popularity took a huge hit.

Two former lovers - Cecilia Cheung and Gillian Chung - recently slammed him in television interviews for entangling them in the scandal.

The Chinese-Canadian left Hong Kong for Vancouver, and it was there that he gave testimony against computer technician Sze Ho Chun, who has been accused of stealing the pictures when Edison's laptop was sent for repair in 2006.

His trial is expected to begin in Hong Kong on 6 Apr. Mr Lum told The Sun that like Edison, he believes that 'Hong Kong is a lawful nation'.

'Edison did wrong, but he certainly doesn't deserve to die,' he said.

'The person who sent the letter had his intentions all messed up. This is such a huge joke.'

No bullet-proof vests for Edison's bodyguards

According to a report in my paper, 25 bodyguards will be deployed to protect Hong Kong celebrity, Edison Chen, when he arrives in Singapore to promote his latest film, Sniper, on April 5.

However, these local bodyguards would not be wearing bulletproof vests, said the spokesperson for the film's distributor, Shaw Organisation.

Said the spokesperson, Faith: "We trust in Singapore's safety laws, and have already spoken to police about the matter."

Faith also revealed that Shaw had spent $10,000 alone on security, out of the total promotional costs of $50,000 to $60,000.

Death threat received

In early March, a report surfaced in the Shin Min Daily News that an anonymous letter packaged together with a gold bullet was sent to a Hong Kong cable television station.

The letter warned actor Edison Chen to stay away from all promotional activities from April 4 onwards if he valued his life.

However, it seems the beleaguered actor is still going ahead with all promotional activities.

The actor had last visited Singapore in late February to attend the launch of Carl's Jr's latest burger, as well as to attend Adidas' 60th anniversary party.

Edison's manager had expressed his concern after seeing the throngs of people who turned up at the events during his brief stopover.

The company's spokesperson, Faith, told reporters that the film company had initially planned activities for Edison to interact with his fans this time round.

However, all plans were subsequently shelved in consideration for the safety of Edison, as well as members of the public.

As to whether Edison would bring his own personal bodyguards, the company said it is unaware of the arrangement.

No media interviews

With the recent bad press surrounding Edison, including news of his father's bankruptcy and Cecilia Chung's criticisms of him in a televised interview, it was feared that Edison may not be able to handle the pressure of handling questions from the media.

To protect his interests, the film company stated that Edison would only be present for the official press conference, and will not be scheduled for any individual interviews.

'We were Edison's human shields'

What is it like protecting such a high-profile celebrity as Edison Chen?

Reporters from the Shin Min Daily news posed this question to four bodyguards who were assigned to protect him on his last promotional trip to the Lion City for the launch of Carl's Jr latest product and Adidas' 60th anniversary bash.

The four guys, described by Shin Min as looking like stars themselves, said they basically acted as 'human shields' for the Hong Kong star.

When interviewed, one of them, Conradd Chua, 30, laughed and said: "He (Edison) was very quiet and did not speak more than a few sentences. In order to avoid the paparazzi and reporters that were chasing us, we had to move quickly in and out of places together with him."

Mr Anthony Ong, manager of security company Event Security Specialists, was calm when quizzed by reporters if he were afraid of the danger posed to security personnel protecting Edison.

"No matter which star it is, there is always an element of danger," said Mr Ong.

Hong Kong tabloids have speculated that Edison may wear a bullet-proof vest during his public appearances. Are local bodyguards equipped with such protective gear as well?

Mr Ong replied: "We are just security, we don't carry guns and don't have bullet-proof vests. Singapore is a safe country with strict laws, I believe we need not worry."

As to whether Edison would really be wearing a protective vest, Mr Ong laughed and said: "It is up to the discretion of the star. We don't know and we won't ask. We can't expect Edison to openly tell us, 'I'm wearing a bullet-proof vest, if a shot is fired I can take it'!

What does it take to be a bodyguard?

Mr Chua, in addition to being well-muscled, revealed that he weighs 75kg and is 1.83 metres tall.

However, possessing a good physique is not all to being a bodyguard.

According to Mr Ong, a good bodyguard needs to be very aware of his surroundings and have acute senses to detect unusual sounds and movement.

One common "danger" that security personnel face, is the threat from fans themselves.

Said Mr Ong: "Fans frequently scold security and hurl vulgarities at them, even though they are just doing their job."

However, some fans will usually try to befriend the bodyguards, in hopes that they can get inside information on their idol's whereabouts.

But Mr Ong maintained that "keeping tight-lipped is necessary," as part of the professional conduct for security personnel.

Edison braves death threat to plug movie in S'pore

SINGAPORE, April 5, 2009 (AFP) - Despite being a "little bit afraid" scandal-hit Asian pop star Edison Chen braved a death threat to appear in public in Singapore on Sunday to promote a movie called "The Sniper".

His appearance came less than a month after a Hong Kong television station received an anonymous letter packed together with a gold bullet warning Chen to stay away from public events if he valued his life.

"If I say I'm not fearful, I would be lying," the 28-year-old told a packed and tightly guarded media conference at a hotel in Singapore.

"I'm a little afraid but I have to do what needs to be done (to promote the film) so I hope everyone will welcome me and watch my movie," he said, referring to the crime thriller "The Sniper" directed by Hong Kong film director Dante Lam.

About 20 security personnel, including four uniformed private guards armed with handguns, were at the media conference venue.

The actor-singer had been one of Asia's biggest entertainment stars until he fell into disgrace after photos he took of his sexual encounters with a string of female celebrities were plastered across the Internet last year.

Chen, 28, was wearing a dark shirt with the top button off, and there were no visible signs he was wearing a bullet proof vest, an AFP reporter said.

Hong Kong triads have allegedly offered a 110,000 US dollar reward for the star's right hand, according to Hong Kong media reports.

Chen at the news conference thanked Singapore for welcoming him and said he hopes to resume his career in Hong Kong.

"I hope to be able to continue (working) in the Hong Kong movie industry but I'm taking things slowly for now," he said. "I will be brave to face whatever mistakes I've made."

The sex photos taken by Chen became an Internet sensation when they were posted online, forcing him into early retirement and sending him fleeing to his childhood home of Canada.

The pictures showed Chen in compromising positions with various celebrities, including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan.

Chen has said the photos had been stored on a personal laptop computer that had gone missing. He believed the release of the photos was due to "some foul play" by employees at a Hong Kong computer store.

Computer technician behind Edison Chen sex photo leak

More details have emerged from the trial of the computer technician who is charged with illegally accessing Edison Chen's computer and distributing racy photos of him and numerous starlets.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, two female friends testified against Sze Ho-chun, 24. They were also the ones who reported him to the police when the photos started being widely distributed on the Internet in January 2008.

They say that in 2006, when he was at their store to repair an Apple PowerMacG5, he connected his computer to the company server to show them the racy photos.

He then burnt about 1,300 photos onto DVDs and passed it to them as gifts, and even told them how he obtained the images.

Sze Ho-chun, an employee of computer shop Elite Multimedia, saw the images on Edison Chen's laptop when the Canadian-born singer-actor brought it in for repair work in 2006, prosecutor Hayson Tse told the Kowloon City Magistracy.

He was shown the photos by a colleague who was repairing Edison's computer and duplicated them in private.

He has been charge with three counts of obtaining access to a computer with dishonest intent, and may be sentence to five years imprisonment is found guilty.

Sze allegedly sparked one of the city's biggest sex scandals when the photos, which Chen has admitted taking himself, were plastered across the Internet for weeks in February last year.

The pictures showed Chen in compromising positions with celebrities including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan.

Edison appeared in Singapore on Sunday (April 5) to promote his movie "The Sniper".

Wanbao reports that he lashed out at reporters from a local news website when they asked him about his father's bankruptcy, saying "I don't know why people won't think that I will help my family. What makes you think that I am not helping my family?"

His appearance came less than a month after a Hong Kong television station received an anonymous letter packed together with a gold bullet warning Chen to stay away from public events if he valued his life.
