Edison draws crowds

edison1.jpg

Edison Chen flew in from Canada, where he had given evidence in a court case over his leaked sex photos involving Hong Kong starlets.

EDISON Chen was in Singapore for the launch of Carl's Jr's new 100 per cent Angus Beef Thickburger, at the Bang & Olufsen showroom in Grand Hyatt Hotel yesterday.
A huge crowd had gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the actor, who waved to them before being escorted back to his hotel room.

He flew in from Canada, where he had given evidence in a court case over his leaked sex photos involving Hong Kong starlets. He later went to Timberlux Warehouse for an adidas party.

Earlier on Thursday, Cecilia Cheung called Edison Chen an unreliable man in her first interview on the sex photo scandal that they were involved in last year, said The Sun newspaper.

Days after the actress was named in court as one of the women in the actor's pictures, she spoke to her friend, cable TV talk-show host Albert Au.

The interview was scheduled for broadcast yesterday, after lawyers vetted its content, the report said.

According to The Sun, she did not name Chen but said he was untruthful and unreliable and had made trouble for female celebrities. She also said he had told lies.

Chen has maintained that the photos of himself and his partners were stolen from his laptop and posted online.

He testified in Vancouver on Monday against computer technician Sze Ho Chun, who will be tried in Hong Kong.

Cheung was quoted as saying in the report: 'I bear the weight of my mistake. I have sentenced myself to jail. In the past year I haven't met people.'

The actress, who is married to Chen's former classmate, actor Nicholas Tse, also thanked her husband and in-laws for their support.

She was quoted as saying of Tse: 'I really can't find another husband as good as him.' She shed tears after saying this.

She said she would certainly return to filming if she was given a good script, unless she got pregnant again. Cheung and Tse, both 28, have an 18-month-old son, Lucas.

MAYHEM AT EDISON CHEN'S ARRIVAL
GRAND HYATT, 4.30PM
FIRST APPEARANCE, 8PM
Some fall down in frantic shoving
By Germaine Lim and Charlene Chua

March 01, 2009

NP_IMAGES_GLEDISON-8LQ.jpg

FOUR years ago, Edison Chen arrived in Singapore to little fanfare to promote Hong Kong racing flick Initial D (2005). Then, the attention was on his co-star Jay Chou.

But when the 29-year-old actor arrived in Singapore yesterday, it was a huge media circus.

Hardly surprising, since this was his first official media appearance since his sex photo scandal broke last year.

Intimate photos of the actor and several Hong Kong female celebrities like Gillian Chung of Twins and actress Cecilia Cheung were leaked onto the Internet.

Edison, a personal friend of the local management of fast food chain Carl's Jr., was in town to launch Angus Beef Thickburger at Grand Hyatt hotel's Bang & Olufsen (B&O) boutique last evening.

Local media started waiting for his arrival at Changi Airport's Terminal 1 at 10am. When the first flight from Hong Kong landed at about 1pm, there was no sign of him.

Hong Kong and Malaysian media showed up later.

There was one solitary fan, customer service officer Katalina Jiang, 21, who had gone to the airport at 10am.

An Edison fan since 2003, she said: 'I took leave because I want to pass Edison my telephone number. I cried when news of the scandal broke. I have a feeling he'll call me.'

She said she 'envied the girls who slept with him' and that speaking to reporters about him had taken her 'one step closer to Edison'.

But her hopes were dashed as there was still no sign of the actor at 4pm.

Ms Julia Jemangin, corporate communications manager of CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore), later told The New Paper that Edison had made his exit through Jet Quay's CIP Lounge, a contained terminal.

The media then rushed to the Grand Hyatt at Scotts Road, where Edison is putting up during his short stay here.

The air was tense and security was hawkish at the hotel's main entrance.

Barricades had been set up and no fewer than 10 suited-up bodyguards waited for Edison's arrival.

Finally at 4.30pm, a white van pulled up. It was Edison and his entourage of six.

Photographers surged forward and even blocked the van. For a moment, it seemed impossible for Edison to get out.

NP_IMAGES_GLEDISON-DAB.jpg

Then came shouts from security personnel who shoved aside anyone in their way.

In the mayhem, some photographers fell and The New Paper's Kua Chee Siong sprained his ankle.

When Edison finally emerged from the van, it was an image of a celebrity who had unwittingly walked into intense media scrutiny.

Wearing a white beanie and attention-grabbing red shoes, the actor, whose boyish-looking face was shielded by large sunglasses, hung his head low as he entered the hotel lobby, ignoring the media.

It seemed ironic that a celebrity who sneaked out of the airport would enter the hotel by its main doors.

Some photographers who managed to get past security chased him to the lift but that was as far as they got.

Businessman Tony Neo, 30, who happened to be waiting for his friend at the lobby was shocked at 'the chaos'.

'It's not the poor guy's (Edison's) fault with regards to what happened anyway. He was sabotaged,' he said.

By 7pm, a curious crowd and Edison's fans had gathered outside the heavily-guarded hotel.

Most had read newspaper reports of his appearance and hoped to catch a glimpse of the elusive star whose new movie, The Sniper, will premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival on 24 Mar.

Edison was last seen in a small role in The Dark Knight (2008).

Student James Li, 18, who has been a fan since Initial D, had been waiting since 5pm.

He told The New Paper: 'He's good-looking and fashionable. I'm eagerly anticipating his return to showbiz. I think he was very brave in admitting to the sex photo scandal. He's even made a public apology.'

Even tourists from San Francisco knew about Edison and his scandal. 'Poor guy' was how a sympathetic soul described him.

NP_IMAGES_GLEDISON-6CT.jpg

The Carl's Jr. event, which was supposed to start at 7.15pm, was delayed until Edison's arrival at 8pm.

His appearance sparked another wave of chaos and mayhem.

Photographers jostled for a good shot of Edison who was surrounded by a circle of at least 10 bodyguards.

Once inside B&O, he made his way to the stage where he joined host Eunice Olsen and local celebrity Irene Ang to launch Carl's Jr.'s Angus Beef Thickburger.

He turned briefly to the screaming crowd outside and waved to them.

Barely five minutes later, Edison made his exit from the high-end electronics boutique.

When Edison saw the sea of photographers, he tried to make an about-turn. But his bodyguards pushed him forward.

Ignored questions

NP_IMAGES_UMBRELLA.jpg

SHELTERED: Minders (above) shielding Edison from the cameras with umbrellas before he takes the stage at the Adidas launch.
When he passed the media, he ignored questions from Hong Kong reporters who asked him about Cecilia's recent interview about the scandal, in which she called him a liar and hypocrite.

He had named her as one of the women in the photos in a hearing in Vancouver for the Hong Kong trial of a man who had allegedly leaked the photos onto the Internet.

In the commotion, guests and media were shoved towards pillars to make way for Edison and his entourage.

The next minute, amid the pushing and jostling, a table collapsed and champagne glasses shattered as they fell onto the floor.

For a while, it seemed that Edison had left the event and was on his way to the Adidas event.

But the star reappeared 10 minutes later, this time to a significantly-dwindled mediacrowd.

Edison entered a VIP-only lounge within B&O and was seen happily tucking into the Angus Thickburger.

Local celebrities Allan Wu and wife Wong Li-Lin also took a photo and chatted with him.

When contacted by The New Paper, Allan said: 'He was a very nice guy and said he really likes Singapore.'

Edison hung around for about 25 mins and left, presumably for the Adidas event.

When this reporter asked Edison to take a photo with her, Edison turned and seemed to agree. But the tired-looking Edison was swiftly whisked off.

CALM AND CONTRITE
Cecilia Cheung speaks up for first time after scandal

I have imprisoned myself for a year
By Gan Ling Kai

NP_IMAGES_LKCC.jpg

BARING HER THOUGHTS: Cecilia Cheung in an exclusive interview with i-Cable Entertainment News anchorman and friend Au Wing Kyun. --PICTURE: ORIENTAL DAILY HK

A DAY before the Edison Chen circus hit Singapore, one of his 'women' revealed how she had become a virtual prisoner in her own home since the sex photo scandal broke in January last year.

It was the first time that Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung has opened up on how the scandal has affected her.

She broke into tears during an exclusive interview in Hong Kong with i-Cable Entertainment News anchorman and friend Au Wing Kyun on Thursday evening.

'I accepted my mistake, I have imprisoned myself, and I have not gone out to meet the public for a year,' she revealed in the interview.

Asked about her past relationship with Edison, she said someone was dishonest and not dependable, causing distress to several female celebrities.

On Tuesday, Edison told a special hearing in Canada, where he lives now, that Gillian Chung, Cecilia, Bobo Chan and Rachel Ngan were some of the women seen in the sex photos that leaked on the Internet after his laptop was sent for repair.

Computer technician Sze Ho Chun, 24, is on trial in Hong Kong for allegedly circulating the images.

Grateful for support

During the interview, Cecilia also expressed gratitude for the support from her in-laws, Patrick Tse Yin and Deborah Lai, and her husband Nicholas Tse.

Breaking down in tears, she exclaimed: 'It is impossible to find a husband as great as him.'

Her pictures with Edison were taken before she married Nicholas in 2006.

As for her career, Cecilia said she will continue to act if she comes across an excellent script. But if she becomes pregnant, taking care of the newborn will be her top priority.

The couple have a son who's about a year old.

Cecilia, who used to be known for her sex appeal, praised her in-laws as scoring 'over 100 points'.

In response, Patrick reportedly commented: 'Cecilia is such a wonderful daughter-in-law. I love her to bits. It is very rare that a young girl like her is willing to sacrifice so much for love.

'Sometimes, I can't help but ask her, 'What kind of human being are you?' Right now, she is my super daughter-in-law, I give her more than 100 points!'

While attending a separate event on Tuesday, Cecilia's sister-in-law, Jennifer Tse, expressed her acceptance: 'Everybody has a past. I love her, she is wonderful. She is a great mum and lovely daughter-in-law.'

On Thursday, Cecilia's husband Nicholas appeared relaxed when he was asked how he felt about Cecilia's mention in the court trial.

He casually put his arms around a reporter and said with a smile: 'Let's talk some other time.'

Emerging one hour later from a photo studio, he posed with one hand in his pocket and allowed reporters to take as many pictures as they wanted, and waved goodbye before leaving in his manager's car.

In March last year, in a press conference to address the scandal, he proclaimed total acceptance of Cecilia, saying: 'I knew her past even before marrying her.'

He's donating S'pore appearance fees to charity
By Yeoh Wee Teck

March 01, 2009

THE bad boy is gone.

Say hello to the kinder, gentler Edison Chen.

The actor turned up at Timberlux Warehouse at Havelock Road for an Adidas Originals event.

Unlike the ready-to-rumble security unit enveloping him, Edison was charming and friendly when he met the press for a frenzied five-minute chat.

'I'm in Singapore because I've got to fulfil my contract with Carl's Jr. and I've always worked with Adidas.

'So when Adidas invited me, I agreed.'

He turned up at the event suitably dressed.

He was clad head-to-toe in Adidas, with the clothes and shoes designed by his friend Kazuki.

He also mingled with fans at the VIP area, and caused an explosion of camera flashes when he appeared.

'I've always loved Singapore, especially the fans and the food. I'm getting used to the tropic heat again though.'

Polite chatter aside, he didn't address the sex photo scandal issue directly, but acknowledged he has had a bad year.

However, he saw it as a good learning experience.

'I did wrong and it was a tough year, but I've grown a lot since.

'Ironically, last year, I told my manager I was ready to take a break. But this was not the way I thought it would be.'

He added: 'This past year, I've been taking it easy.

'I've been going to the gym six days a week, and I've been reading and thinking over things.

'I've been trying to figure things out.'

It seems that charity may be the answer.

He said he will donate all the earnings from his Singapore appearances to charity.

'I was in Shanghai watching a basketball game when I met Jet Li with a bunch of kids.

'This is a charity cause I believe in, and I've seen how it has helped.'

He added: 'Right now, I want to use my influence - if I have any left - and my talent to help the less fortunate.'

Video: Edison Chen mobbed!
Posted on February 28, 2009 by Postwoman

edison-chen.jpg

It would be an understatement to describe the mob hounding Edison Chen as chaotic. Media from all over the region, but mostly Hong Kong, were out in full force to catch a glimpse of the scandal-ridden actor (need we repeat what happened?), in town as a special guest for events by burger chain Carl’s Jr and apparel company adidas.

We can’t describe exactly what the scene was like at the hotel when Edison arrived, so we offer you this exclusive video, shared with us by reader Tony Neo.

*Note: You won’t be able to see Edison’s face, but you can spot him from the white beanie he’s wearing. Look out for staff trying, but failing, to stop the media from following him further into the hotel.

Watching the video makes us wonder: why didn’t he go through a back entrance, like the stars do in Hollywood?!

Enraged by leaked sex pix

cc.jpg

'If you're sincere about taking responsibility for your mistakes, at the very least you should call us personally to say sorry,' said Cecilia Cheung. -- PHOTO: APPLE DAILY

HONG KONG - A FAMOUS Hong Kong entertainer who appears in nude photos that were leaked on the Internet lashed out at movie star Edison Chen, who shot the pictures, for failing to protect the women in the images.
It was the first time actress Cecilia Cheung has spoken out since the photos Chen took of her and seven other local stars performing sex acts with him were widely circulated last year, setting off a scandal that shocked the Chinese-speaking community.

Chen testified on Monday against a Hong Kong computer technician charged with stealing the photos from the actor's laptop. The 28-year-old, whose credits include Infernal Affairs and The Grudge 2, apologised for the photos and has since stayed out of the public eye.

Last week Chen said he hoped everyone who suffered as result of the scandal would recover emotionally and insisted that their well-being was more important than his.

'I've always said the scandal is my fault. ... If lashing out at me will ease her pain, I'm willing to shoulder more,' he wrote in a statement on Friday, referring to Cheung.

An emotional Cheung said in an interview with Hong Kong's i-CABLE Entertainment News Channel aired late on Friday that Chen failed to prevent the pictures from being circulated and never apologised to her personally.

'If you're sincere about taking responsibility for your mistakes, at the very least you should call us personally to say sorry,' she said.

'How dare you say you protected us and hope we will recover?' said Cheung - whose acting credits include The Promise and One Nite in Mongkok - noting that the photos were still online. -- AP

Edison Chen was her 'greatest love'
But Gillian Chung says she expects an apology from him as she seeks closure
March 09, 2009

SHE too wants an apology from Edison Chen

Pop star Gillian Chung, one of the four women embroiled in the Edison Chen sex-photos scandal, has echoed actress Cecilia Cheung's sentiments in a TV interview.

Days earlier, Cecilia, a fellow victim, had accused Edison of not coming forward with a personal apology to the four women who were photographed in intimate acts with him.

In an interview on TVB's Be My Guest series, in which she broke her silence after more than a year after the scandal erupted, Gillian said she wants an explanation and apology from Edison, even though she doubts she would ever see him again.

'I've been under so much pressure. I want an apology or some kind of consolation, but there's nothing,' Gillian, one half of Cantopop duo Twins, said.

The 28-year-old singer added that she was deeply bothered that Edison, who is now overseas, had not tried to contact her, reported the South China Morning Post.

'What he said in public does not matter. But at least, he should have talked to us...,' she said.

'When it happened, when I wanted to make sure what had actually happened, of course he was the one to talk to. But I could not find him. I felt so helpless.'

The interview was previewed to the Hong Kong media on Friday night. The full interview will be aired today.

On and off

Gillian said Edison had been stringing her along on and off for nearly five years, ever since her showbiz career was launched in 2000.

Her singing partner, Charlene Choi, had warned her that Edison was a bad guy, she added, but she turned a deaf ear to the former's words.

She described Edison as her greatest love, and said he had a huge influence on her.

Was it that same influence that led her to allowing him to take photos of them having sex?

Gillian said she did not want to lose Edison. He had also assured her that the pictures were for his own pleasure and that no one else would see them.

Gillian then talked about Edison not apologising again.

'I thought why didn't (he) call to apologise. Or why didn't he explain the whole thing to me?' she said.

'But I have had nothing to do with him any more, so whether I forgive him does not matter... I think I will not see him again.'

In February last year, when the scandal was at its peak, Gillian had made a brief statement saying she had been naive and silly about her love for Edison.

Her remarks in February led to criticism from those who said her response was in stark contrast to her tearful reaction to being secretly photographed while changing her clothes in Malaysia.

'I was angry. I felt that I had been raped,' she said.

'But those (Malaysian) photos... it was unfortunate they were leaked. There's a big difference between voluntary and involuntary actions.'

Gillian said the Edison scandal, of which Bobo Chan and Rachel Ngan were also victims, drove her to the brink of suicide. She also thought of quitting showbiz.

But she chose to persevere, largely for the sake of her family - her sister, mother and grandparents.

'I'm in this business for my family. I want to give them a better life. So I don't want to give up just like that,' she said.

After a year out of the spotlight, Gillian will make an official return on Tuesday at a press conference for Hong Kong fashion chain Bauhaus' Tough Jeansmith, a jeans brand she endorsed.

How will the press and the public take to her return?

She confessed that she was afraid of the press, but insisted she would not run away.

'(The scandal) was so long ago and all I hope is that people can at least give me some dignity,' she said.

'I do not expect people to forgive me... I know the future will be tough but I will not give up.'

No sympathy from public

Judging by response to the clips of the interview that were aired on Thursday night, it appears Gillian has a lot more work to do to regain the public support she lost because of the scandal.

After clips of her interview were aired on Thursday night, the Hong Kong Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority received 215 complaints from viewers. (See story right.)

A computer technician in Hong Kong has been charged with illegally posting the photos online.

Viewers: Get her off the air
March 09, 2009

WHERE is the love?

When photo scandal victim Cecilia Chung appeared on the air to slam Edison Chen for failing to protect her privacy, the actress' tearful face won her many sympathy votes from viewers.

Now, just days later, singer Gillian Chung is getting a completely different reaction.

Her interview on TVB's Be My Guest series is due to be aired today, but a segment of the session was broadcast on Hong Kong television on Thursday.

Instead of taking Gillian's side, viewers clamoured for her to get off the air.

After the interview segment was shown on the 6.30pm news slot and on an infotainment programme, the Hong Kong Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority received 215 complaints from viewers, reported Apple Daily.

TVB also got calls from members of the public who wanted to express their disgust, while Cable Television received about 60 calls from viewers who felt that the interview should not have been shown during the news slot.

Some added that they felt Gillian would be a bad influence on young people, and would instill the wrong values.

Cable Television also received calls from 28 viewers who wanted to offer their support. Some callers said that everyone makes mistakes, and Gillian should be given another chance.

Netizens have also chimed in, slamming the singer for continuing to play the 'innocent and naive' card.

Besides giving their comments on Gillian, a number of callers criticised the station for using the interview as a selling point. Viewership for the time slot during which her interview was aired went up by two points.

A spokesman for Cable Television said that the news slot was chosen because the Edison photo scandal was a hot topic in Hong Kong and an issue of interest to Chinese people around the world.

When Cheung's interview was screened earlier, there were only three complaints received.

The actress has also received very public support from husband Nicholas Tse and her parents-in-law.

Nicholas' sister, Jennifer Tse, who attended an event on 5 Mar, said: 'Our family will support Cecilia unconditionally no matter what happens. I love her very much and I can see she really loves her child. She is my brother's wife, so our love is unconditional.'
