Shanghai households to get free Expo tickets

The Shanghai government will distribute an Expo package, which will include free tickets, to every permanent household in Shanghai.

The package will also include a thank-you note from the government, a map, a badge of Expo mascot Haibao and a transportation card worth 200 yuan (US$29.3). The tickets are valid for a one-month period between June and September.

Residents, both Chinese and foreign, who have lived in Shanghai for at least six months are eligible to receive the package. People with resident permits or a Shanghai hukou (registered residence) that have been registered at least six months are also qualified.

Neighborhood committees will begin verifying qualified residents before distributing the packages between May 15 and May 29. Residents will need to show their residence booklets and relevant documents, which should be dated no later than March 31, to accept them.

Residents who are out of town during the distribution period can apply for a replacement in citizen centers or community affair service centers. Community committees will draw the packages for the disabled or people who are unable to go. The advisory hotline is 962200.

The whole process will open to public supervision with hotline 12388.

According to the latest data recently released by the local statistical bureau, the number of Shanghai's permanent residents stood at 19.21 million at the end of 2009, including 13.79 million registered permanent residents.

Give way to YOG vehicles

FRET not if you see a bus dressed in the distinct purple livery of the Youth Olympic Games ply Singapore's busy highways over the next month or so.

Blinking white lights, special licence plates bearing the words 'YOG' and lanes which have been painted with prominent road markings consisting of the five Olympic rings are the three main cues motorists have to look out for if they are to give way to these vehicles during the inaugural Games.

Only the second left-most lanes of affected roads, designated as Youth Olympic Lanes, will be used by the fleet of 700 buses, cars and limousine taxis. Signs and banners have also been put up by the sides of roads to alert motorists.

Parts of the seven major expressways, such as the Pan-Island Espressway and the Central Expressway are involved in the scheme, while smaller roads like Bishan Road and Chin Swee Road have been affected as well.

The ruling, which will come into effect during the Youth Olympic Lane validity period between August 5-26, could see motorists face a $130 fine should they fail to give way.

eh because shanghai expo last 6 months, so they have to drum up attendence. while yog is much shorter, so they do not really need to give away tickets to everyone. just the school students.

Free to the school students? I thought MOE pays for the tickets?
