Little durian star, the official mascot chosen to represent Singapore at the Shanghai World Expo, makes Singaporeans look bad, complained one of them.
Singapore, April 16, 2010 - Little durian star, the official mascot chosen to represent Singapore at the Shanghai World Expo, makes Singaporeans look bad, said reader TCH.
The Chinese text on the official website refers to the mascot as a fictional 5-year-old character who lives overseas with his Singaporean parents, said TCH.
He complained to Stomp: "He wears a durian suit because he is obsessed with durians.
This makes it seem like the boy has become stupidly crazy over the fruit."
TCH said he came across the official website for Singapore Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.
He said: “Whoever designed or wrote the introduction for Singapore Pavilion seems to be doing a great job at helping Singaporeans lose face overseas.
“How can this (durian-obsessed boy) be a mascot for Singapore?”
“This is what I gathered from the Chinese text on the website.
“The mascot is a five-year-old boy from Singapore whose parents are living overseas (quitters?).
“He loves to eat durians but durians can't be found everywhere.
“Hence, this 'durian-obsessed' boy’s mother made him a durian suit.
“I’m just wondering who wrote this and designed this mascot for Singapore.
“Was there no editor to review the content before publishing it?”
