SINGAPORE : Police have nabbed a 40-year-old man for failing to stop at a police roadblock along Tyrwhitt Road towards Lavender Street.
The incident happened on Tuesday at about 4.20am.
Police said the driver initially moved his vehicle to the side of the road when signalled by the officers to do so.
But just when the officers were about to conduct further checks, the driver picked up speed and sped off from the scene.
Officers pursued the car.
Police said the suspect was driving recklessly, swerving his car from left to right before losing control of his vehicle.
He ended up hitting a lamp post after his car mounted a kerb at the junction of Kallang Avenue.
He then got out of his car and fled on foot.
Officers gave chase and caught up with him.
The driver put up a violent struggle but officers managed to detain him.
Police said the driver smelled of alcohol.
He also refused to have his blood and breath tested.
Commander of Traffic Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheang Keng Keong, condemned such dangerous driving and disregard for the law by drivers.
He said: "The driver had displayed a blatant disregard of the law by not stopping at the police roadblock. Worse still, he could have endangered the lives of other road users with his reckless driving.
He can expect to face the full brunt of the law and should be prepared to bear the consequences of his irresponsible actions."
