A former carpenter was jailed for seven weeks and banned from driving for five years on Friday for causing grievous hurt to a trainee teacher on a scooter along Pan-Island Expressway.
Goh Hwee Tiong, 52, now unemployed, was driving a lorry when he swerved his vehicle leftwards and side-swiped the 27-year-old victim's scooter while trying to overtake her. He did not give any signal while overtaking her nor when he swerved his lorry leftwards back into the centre lane.
As a result, Ms Hazel Ng, a probationary rider, skidded and she fell onto the road. The Jan 18 incident was captured by a camera of a car travelling behind the lorry. The video, which went viral, was played in court on Friday.
Ms Ng underwent emergency surgery to her right shoulder blade which was broken and repairs to her right elbow with skin grafting. She had abrasions on her chin and knees.
