A former carpenter was jailed for seven weeks and banned from driving for five years on Friday for causing grievous hurt to a trainee teacher on a scooter along Pan-Island Expressway.
Goh Hwee Tiong, 52, now unemployed, was driving a lorry when he swerved his vehicle leftwards and side-swiped the 27-year-old victim's scooter while trying to overtake her. He did not give any signal while overtaking her nor when he swerved his lorry leftwards back into the centre lane.
As a result, Ms Hazel Ng, a probationary rider, skidded and she fell onto the road. The Jan 18 incident was captured by a camera of a car travelling behind the lorry. The video, which went viral, was played in court on Friday.
Ms Ng underwent emergency surgery to her right shoulder blade which was broken and repairs to her right elbow with skin grafting. She had abrasions on her chin and knees.

Jail, driving ban for man caught side-swiping motorcycle on viral video
SINGAPORE: A lorry driver who side-swiped a motorcycle and caused injury to the rider was on Friday jailed seven weeks and banned from driving for five years.
52-year-old Goh Hwee Tiong admitted to causing grievous hurt to 27-year-old Hazel Ng, a trainee teacher.
The incident occurred on January 18 at about 1.35pm along Pan Island Expressway towards Changi Airport.
At that time, both parties were driving along the centre lane of the three-lane expressway at about 80 to 85 kilometres per hour.
The accused's lorry followed closely behind Ms Ng, then a probationary rider.
Goh then started to overtake Ms Ng on her right, and without signalling, he started to filter towards the right lane.
This caused a side-swipe of the victim's motorcycle, which skidded.
The incident was captured by the camera of the car travelling behind them, and the video went viral online. - CNA/nd
