PAP’s new candidate Dr Janil Puthucheary’s ‘tongue in the cheek’ comment that he too has ’served’ NS by saving kids’ lives for 10 years not only smacks of utter insensitivity, arrogance and contempt of the sacrifices made by Singapore NSmen, but also displayed his complete ignorance about National Service.
Going by Dr Janil’s wraped logic, shouldn’t all Singapore male doctors be exempted from National Service too since they have been saving lives upon graduation from medical school?
There are many male paediatricians in Singapore, both in the public and private sectors who have served or are still serving NS and there is no reason why Dr Janil should be exempted from it as well.
It is incomprehensible that Dr Janil should apply to be a Singapore citizen only 2 years ago despite staying in Singapore (on and off) for the last ten years.
Though he may have passed the 35 year old cap for serving NS, he can still contribute his part by volunteering himself for the 5 week Medical Officer Cadet Course (MOCC).
Not all Singapore male doctors are disrupted from medical school. Those who are PES C and below serve their NS in non-combat vocations and as such they will have to attend MOCC after they graduate to ‘convert’ them into army medical officers.
Age is not a barrier to the MOCC. There were doctors more than 40 years of age who had been called up to attend the MOCC which is a very ‘relaxed’ course consisting chiefly of lectures.
As Dr Janil is working in a public hospital, he can easily obtain the 5 week reservist leave needed to attend the MOCC. Not only will his pay during this period of time being totally paid for by SAF, the workload is likely to be much lighter. Some doctors have even described the MOCC as a ‘holiday camp.’
Upon passing out from MOCC, Dr Janil will be able to serve NS as a reservist MO. NS is an integral aspect of life in Singapore males. Will a prospective MP able to understand the sacrifices made by Singapore males without having gone through the ‘baptism of fire’ himself?
Since Dr Janil is joining politics to ’serve’ Singaporeans, he should walk his talk first by signing up for NS to prove his commitment to Singapore. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for him to interact with ordinary Singaporeans to facilitate his ‘integration’ into our society.
