Diego Maradona becomes Argentina national coach in November 2008. He arrived with a bang!

- International Friendly: Scotland 0 Argentina 1
- International Friendly: France 0 Argentina 2
- World Cup Qualifying: Argentina 4 Venezuela 0

Then, things began to get erratic...

- World Cup Qualifying: Bolivia 6 Argentina 1
- International Friendly: Argentina 3 Panama 1
- World Cup Qualifying: Argentina 1 Colombia 0
- World Cup Qualifying: Ecuador 2 Argentina 0
- International Friendly: Russia 2 Argentina 3

Then, things got worse...

- World Cup Qualifying: Argentina 1 Brazil 3
- World Cup Qualifying: Paraguay 1 Argentina 0

3 consecutive World Cup qualifying defeats now place Argentina on the brink of failure to to qualify for the World Cup. 2 games left next month. Home versus Peru and away versus Uruguay. Maradona and Argentina must go out to win both games. Otherwise, the unimaginable for this generation of football fans will happen, a World Cup without Argentina.

Maradona insists he will do everything to qualify

<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --><!-- template inline -->Under-pressure Argentina coach Diego Maradona insists he will continue to fight for World Cup qualification, despite his side's damaging 1-0 defeat to Paraguay on Wednesday.

The Argentine coach is under pressure.

The former legend has not enjoyed a successful run as manager of the national team and Nelson Valdez's goal condemned Argentina to a fourth defeat in their past five qualifiers.
Argentina - who are one point behind fourth-placed Ecuador in the standings - are at home to Peru on October 10, and then away to sixth-placed Uruguay three days later and realistically must win both matches if they are to avoid a play-off, or worse.
But Maradona insists there is no need to panic and that Argentina are "still alive".
"I never imagined myself being in this situation, I thought we would be much higher. But this is the reality. Despite everything we still have a chance, we still aren't out of the World Cup. While I have a dot of blood I will do everything for Argentina to qualify," he said.
"We will chat as a group to find out the mistakes and to see what happened to us in these important matches that we lost when prepared well mentally. And we will prepare ourselves like we always have.
"I will reunite with the rest of the coaching staff and we will find out where we went wrong. If we should have gone out with one player or the other. But we will do this in private and with my assistants. And then we will speak to the players. We will say what we need to say with the players."
With regards to a potential play-off match, former World Cup winner claimed he was not worried by the prospect of playing a CONCACAF side: "There's no drama. In 1994 we had to travel 24 hours for a play-off. No-one died due to playing it, and at the end we qualified for the World Cup. We are still alive," he said.

Why should the World Cup be any less exciting without Argentina? Good riddance I would say.

Maybe you're too young to know who's Diego Maradona. He's the only one ever in World Cup history to win it single handledly, literally. :D

A handball and an own goal. Boo!

1986 Argentina 2 - 1 England

5:40 - England defender made a desperate lunge tripping Maradona and poking the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Yes, after that he admitted to England's Gary Linker, it was an illegal handball. But he said if the referee gave the goal, claim it and take it!

Lineker's reply was, he blamed the referee, not Maradona. One of the greatest sportsman ever, this Gary Lineker.

One of the greatest robberies in WC history,
when they knocked out my beloved England back in 86.
I had to cried myself to sleep that morning.
:o

Not only will the English will not be crying
for the bloody Argies,
the Brazilian too won't be shedding any tears
after they will cheated of a place in the final
back in 1978.

Funny you should bring up Peru game of 1978, in which Peru gave Argentina more than enough goal difference to take the place in the Final instead of Brazil. Argentina's next qualifying game happens to be against Peru again. Perhaps Peru can save Argentina again. It's almost the same situation as in 1978. Peru are now at the bottom of the table and disqualified. Argentina need a good win to stay on track.

Argentina v. Peru this weekend. If Argentina lose, or even draw, Diego Armando Maradona name should change to Die-n-Go Adios Maradona.

Argentinian camp in disarray less than 48 hours before do-or-die against Peru, with Diego Maradona threatening to quit. There's no serious managerial candidate out there at such short notice.

Singapore Pools open plate - Argentina giving -2.5 goals

And Argentina to win is only $1.06

Smells fishy...and nostalgic...reminiscent of 1978... In 1978, there was no Singapore Pools, but outside bookmakers took Argentina gave 3 goals.

Brazil, Paraguay and Chile have qualified from the South American zone. The 4th qualifying berth will be decided this Wednesday with the Uruguay v. Argentina game. What better climax to end the South American qualifying campaign then a replay of the first ever World Cup grand final? Even movie scripwriters couldn't have imagined that. The winner will surely qualify. If it's a draw, Ecuador may be able to sneak in.
