SINGAPORE: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Friday (Jul 1) ordered the recall of Goods banana cake after it found excess levels of a preservative in the product.

The agency said it detected the presence of sorbic acid in the cake, at levels exceeding the maximum limit for the compound as stated in the Singapore Food Regulations.

The recall is a precautionary measure and is ongoing, said SFA in a media statement.

The cake, imported by Goods Huat Hee Marketing, has a use-by date of Aug 30, 2022. The product's country of origin is Malaysia.

"Sorbic acid is a permitted food additive that is used for preservation purposes," said the agency, adding that consumption of the affected product is unlikely to pose any adverse health effects due to its low toxicity.

Those who have consumed the implicated product and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may also contact their point of purchase for enquiries.

I almost wanted to pick up one from the shelves at Giant last week but was put off by the fuck up packaging.

An enterprising local seller has figured out how to bring popular JB food into Singapore to cater to local demand. Brenda Tan, 42, a “mum working from home”, set up her Instagram page Pioneer Group Buy in August this year. Via the page, customers could order items including Hiap Joo’s banana cake, Yuen Fatt Biscuit Confectionery’s Shanghai-style mooncakes and Ming Ang Confectionery’s heong piah (savoury shallot pastries).

I bought another type of cake from the same manufacturer, it turned bad before I consumed and long before expiry date.
I wrote to then via email but received no reply.
Quite a irresponsible manufacturer

My uncle find banana cake not nice at all and rather eat banana by itself and cake by itself.

The best cakes are found in the Giant mega stall in JB. Cheap and good.

The banana cake and other pastries are sold usually in the supermarkets and provision shops.
