Singaporeans have been trained to think Ministers are super-beings. Come what may, they will weather hell and high-water, so we are (or were) made to believe! But what is the reality? One defeat, a minister who is a former Brigadier-General says he is quitting politics, and the first ever woman minister is echoing him. The decision of these stalwarts have demolished the confidence Singaporeans have in PAP ministers. It only reinforces the belief that these people will only stay when the going is good.
This morning while I was at a kopi-tiam in Serangoon North, an Aljunied PAP guy complained that he had lost face after the two ministers had thrown in the towel. He was doubtful if the traditional activities like National Day Dinner will be celebrated with the same pomp and oomph of the past. He also speculated that WP would highlight the ministers abandoning their supporters to advance the WP objective. Asked if he will continue being a PAP/grassroots leader, he quipped, "How to when the head is not interested in fighting?"
