So was it just crocodile tears being shed for the cameras? Why was he smiling before the news conference? Wasn't he anguish and sad?

Do not print pictures of me smiling – Lee Kuan Yew

The United Kingdom (UK) introduced the Freedom of Information Act in 2000. It allows members of the public access to otherwise confidential papers in the possession of “public authorities”.

The UK released papers pertaining to Singapore’s independence several years ago.

Below is a copy of a memo which was sent by a UK official in Singapore to the office in London in 1965. In it, the official (whose name and position we aren’t sure of) describes what transpired at the press conference at which Mr Lee Kuan Yew explained Singapore’s departure from Malaysia.

We publish a copy of the memo for one interesting note – contained in the second paragraph of the memo. Mr Lee was reported to have “threatened ‘punitive’ measures against any newspaper which printed pictures of him smiling.”

Was Mr Lee smiling before that press conference? If so, why would he be – given the gravity of the situation and that later in the press conference Mr Lee himself cried?

The memo:

lau chee bye got 18 levels of suana waiting for him soon of cos he can't smile.

Since the break and Andrew's return as head honcho, there has been significant boldness in approach. I bet there will a reaction real soon to this.

That old bag cried because his dream of taking over and controlling Malaysia is over. He didn't cry for Singapore, he cried because his bigger dream to become Malaysia PM is over.

Malaysia could have a standard of living eqivalent to Japan or Singapore today had MM Lee become the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Malaysia politicians, sultans, Datuks and Datins, Tan Sri and Tun Sri and sultans squandered so much of their wealth. The fact that Malaysia still survive with its present standard is basically because of they are still exploiting their natural resources - oil, gas, timber, minerals and rich soil and land, their beaches and mountains.

No wonder Malaysians themselves think they will become bankcrupt in no time if they continue the present way of leaking and wasting their resources.

Of course ignorant Malaysians do not know what they are missing. Monkeys don't see, monkeys don't know!

Nevermind my descendants will laugh and smile all they want!

Malaysia is NOT paradise on earth but, guys, it's not exactly a failed state either. Business goes on, people can and do achieve happiness, but of course, there is also plenty of frustration and a yearning for a better life.

Good point.

LKY knew that if pictures of him smiling were published, game over for him. He's the most insincere political bastard during his time in Malaysia.

Ha ha...nothing new.
Reminds me of the online banner of ministers' pay rise with them smiling away...which was changed some days later :D

Anybody can pull those pics up again?

I frequent JB and I can tell you that many Malaysians are much more cash rich than Singaporeans. They are resourceful in setting their own business (I'm talking about legal business) and making a livelihood without the help and nanny care of their corrupted gov.
