Yes bhoven, your conclusion is most apt. TCB's "fault" is being too principled and direct to the point. When he highlighted what he had done in the past, it sounded like selling koyok. If only he had added some spices and jokes to his deliveries, it might have satisfied the appetites of the opposition supporters.

Two things to comment on your four sentences:

The amount of charisma and grassroots support Dr Tan could generate was nothing short of amazing. Its no wonder the PAP is now trying to kiss and make up after having abandoned their prodigal son and are now trying to claim him back as one of their own. These people LOVED TCB more than they respected loved etc the PAP. and if I were the PAP I would be worried beyond belief as he took 25% away from them just three weeks after a GE using their own people when they were told not to support or help him.

He lost by a cunt hairs breathe. and the reasons were many primarily a more hotly contested election in the form of the angst generated by TJS , which he tried to seem Presidential rise above but did not adequately address.

a. He could have squared the circle, i.e promised something similar to TJS but in a milder more acceptable form , which he did BUT he did NOT DRIVE HOME clearly. Whilst TJS was clear about speaking up and challenging, TCB was circumspect and only hinted at it, hinting at challenging rebelling within the limits of the constitution. I would have trusted TCB to deliver as he said but really it was a promise that was not directly articulated.


b. At the end of the day TCB could have delivered political poison with a smile and would have been believed such was the trust in the man. He tried to play politics as cleanly as possible but what was true of a two or even three cornered fight could not be true in a four cornered one thus the loss.

Tan Cheng Bock is a jolly good fellow. He needs to win, and by a much larger margin next time. For as long as the vote difference is within 2%, foul play is not beyond imagination.

I feel uncomfortable knowing that a compliant president will have his salary influenced by the PAP/ruling government. Either recognize the deficiency and remedy the situation, or make the best of it by voting TCB. In my opinion, TCB might have been suitable despite the $$.

Many old uncles and aunties I know has much better brains then your intellectually senile lot, to them it is easy, say no to PAP linked candidates as PE and vote anyone who is not PAP and these simplistic but steadily effective thinkers is one in every four Singaporeans.

TT will be president on this Thursday with only 1/3 of the popular votes, thanks to TCB supporters and people like you all go eat shit! Choose PAP candidtes as EP, might as well as let PAP choose the EP in the first place.

You have to realize that Tan Cheng Bock had to thread a fine line. As the moderate candidate, he has to win the votes from both the centrist-right and centrist-left voters. His message may not be convincing enough to the leftists, but if he tried to reach out further to them, he will end up alienating the centrist-right voters and losing their votes, for very little gain into the centrist-left votes. Like it or not, there are more of these centrist-right than centrist-left.

Considering that most voting projections, including the Scroobal, severely underestimated the support that TCB would get from the centrist-right, I think Tan Cheng Bock did the right thing with his position. It wasn't your vote that he was trying to win. He was trying to win the vote of the people who would normally vote for the PAP's preferred candidate, and I think he did a good job with that, just a pity it fell a little short.

I was actually thinking that a few three-corner fights in GE2016 similar to Punggol East may do the opposition a bit of good if a few more opposition parties lose their deposit making them realize that Singaporeans have chosen WP as their preferred opposition party to oppose the PAP. That will likely make WP's position even stronger in GE2021 when the other opposition parties would have disbanded or just get out of the way of wherever WP wants to compete.

Same for PE2017.. hopefully Singaporeans won't make the same mistake again.
