A FORMER senior grassroots leader has surfaced as a potential election candidate for the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). He is 55-year old psychiatrist Ang Yong Guan.

Dr Ang was not a People's Action Party (PAP) member but has worked closely with PAP MPs and activists. He was a former chairman of the management committee of Punggol Community Club, and secretary of the Kampong Kembangan citizens' consultative committee (CCC).

He received two National Day Awards: a Public Service Medal for social and community service in 1995 and a Public Administration Medal - Military (Bronze) in 1996.

Dr Ang is said to be among the SDP's slate of 'high-calibre candidates' set to make an appearance at the upcoming polls. The SDP said it would unveil its candidates on Thursday.

Yes they certainly have 1 very highly qualified professional

James_Gomez.jpg

Gomez claimed to have submitted his minority certificate form to the Elections department on April 24. He was accompanied by Worker's Party Chairman Sylvia Lim and was filmed by media cameras as he filled up the form. However, after the media and his Chairman left, he forgot to submit his forms. This was later evidenced by CCTV footage which showed that he kept the form in an envelope in his bag, and left the building without submitting the form.

On April 26, James Gomez called the elections department to enquire about the status of the form. He was indignant that the board said they had not received the form. He even reminded the ELD officer of the "consequences" of misplacing his form, pointing to the CCTV nearby.

On April 27, the Elections Department confirmed through CCTV that Gomez did not submit a "minority-race candidate application form", despite claiming on the eve of Nomination Day that he had done so.

Gomez was part of the WP team that tried to contest in Aljunied GRC during the 2001 GE. They were disqualified because of incomplete nomination papers. The team forgot to write down the name of the GRC in the form

John Tan?

Got to admire that man. He risk his teaching job for democracy :D

John L Tan is what kind of professional?

Hair loss professional?

Dr John Tan is a psychologist. Unlike PAP's Tin Tin, a psychology graduate ever willing suck up to her masters, John is a home-coming patriot from the USA.

He is someone who is prepared to work for the future of Sinkapore. Could have easily bring his family back to the states and enjoy life there. Same as Dr Chee Soon Juan. They are professionals truly willing to do the ultimate sacrifice for S'pore.

Tin Tin? hahaha... not need to talk about her.

sdp spring up last min surprise ah?

I quote ST online at 4.54pm entitled: Singapore Democratic Party unveils 6 candidates

"HE Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) unveiled six of its 11 candidates for the coming elections at a press conference on Thursday.

They are: Academics James Gomez, 46, and John Tan, 49, civil society activist Vincent Wijeysingha, 40, former ISA detainee Teo Soh Lung, 62, teacher Michelle Lee Juen, 35, and entrepreneur Jarrod Luo, 27."

Does this mean that Teo Soh Lung's former career is an ISA detainee. Oh goodness me just look at how fucking low ST can get to discredit opposition.

Even if opposition in my Tanjong Pagar GRC fields dogs and pigs I will still vote for them than for the devils. :oIo: :oIo: :oIo: :oIo: old man.

Agree. Teo Soh Lung was a practising lawyer for many years. She was detained because she had the courage to act as a lawyer to one of the ISA detainees.

James Gomez more careful, spends one hour at Elections Department

SINGAPORE - OPPOSITION candidate James Gomez who made headlines in the last elections over the submission of his minority race certificate, created a buzz when he returned to the Elections Department this morning.

Arriving at about 11.20 am with fellow Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Vincent Wijeysingh, the media trailed them from the road outside the Prinsep street office till they left the place about one hour later.

The SDP team however declined to take any questions from reporters.

In 2006, Dr Gomez claimed he had submitted the application form for his minority race certification but security footage later showed he had left it in his briefcase. Dr Gomez, who was then a Workers' Party candidate, eventually admitted to not filing the form, saying he was 'distracted' and apologised for his mistake. Yesterday, he came and left without anything in his hands.

On the second day for election candidates to collect their nomination documents, several Opposition candidates and People's Action Party representatives came to settle the necessary paperwork or collect a CD with an updated list of voters.

Reform Party secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaratnam collected seven nomination forms in both Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and Single Member Constituency. He also submitted four minority race certifications including one for Socialist Front member Mansor Rahman, 59, who might be contesting in the elections with RP.

Ex-WP member Zeng Guo Yuan, 57, was also spotted. He told reporters he plans to stand as an independent candidate and that he wants to champion housing issues.

Independent candidate Andrew Kuan, who had declared he will contest in Joo Chiat SMC, collected forms for both an SMC and a 4-member GRC. He said he did so out of curiousity.
