A reputable german newspaper reported a raid in SG where 14 people were arrested, among them the suspected leader of that international soccer matchfixing syndicate. Was that reported in the SG papers? I must have missed it.

Football match-fixing: 14 arrested in Singapore in crackdown on alleged criminal ring

Fourteen suspected members of a football match-fixing ring have been arrested in Singapore.

A joint statement from the Singapore police force and the country’s Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said 12 men and two women had been detained.

The operation lasted 12 hours and targeted an organised crime ring, the statement read, though officials would not confirm whether the ring leader, local businessman Dan Tan, was among them as reported by local media.

Tan, also known as Tan Seet Eng, was in May said by Singapore police to be ‘assisting investigators’ in the country.

In the same month he was charged in Hungary over the alleged manipulation of 32 games in three countries.

In Italian court papers it is claimed from Singapore he ran a network of European fixers who paid players in the lower divisions of Italian football in return for influencing the result.

The European anti-crime agency Europol said in February that a Singapore-based syndicate had directed match-fixing for at least 380 matches in Europe alone in an operation worth millions of euros.

Matches were said to include Champions League ties and World Cup qualifiers.

‘Police confirm that the suspected leader and several other individuals who are the subject of ongoing investigations in other jurisdictions for match-fixing were among the persons arrested,’ the statement said.

The general secretary of Interpol, the France-based international police cooperation organisation, the arrests, gave his backing to the arrests.

Ronald K Noble said: ‘Singaporean authorities have taken an important step in cracking down on an international match-fixing syndicate by arresting the main suspects in the case.’

The world governing body Fifa has warned that match-fixing is threatening football on a global scale and has handed down heavy punishments to players and officials found guilty.

In April three Lebanese officials were dropped from refereeing an AFC Cup match in Singapore,

Fifa issued global bans on players from Estonia and Tunisia as well as match officials from Armenia in connection with attempts to manipulate games.

Experts say match-fixers who honed their skills in Singapore and neighbouring Malaysia have since spread to other leagues, providing a link between local gangs and Asian betting syndicates.
