Happy Vesak Day, my Buddhist friends.
Was at our BB office with some students attending a class at Gavin's Tuition. Running this learning centre is Dr Gavin Ng who emphasizes innovation and learning through fun and experimentation (two words you don’t often see going together).
But when it comes to preparing for exams, Dr Ng’s classes are no slouch either. The students are put through their paces quite rigorously. So, the Elections Dept (ELD) has decided to make it easier for voters in nursing homes and those overseas to vote. Anything that facilitates the voting process is welcome.
But here's the problem. The ELD is still subsumed under the PM's Office (PMO). As long as this is the case, few Singaporean will see the election system as fair.
Add to this the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee working in such a non-transparent manner, and questions about the fairness of the electoral system are not about to go away.
The formulae for how GRC boundaries are drawn (case in point: Marine Parade)., what determines a GRC as 4-, 5- or 6-members, which GRCs require an Indian, Malay or "Other" candidate, etc. are as clear as m&d.
As long as the ELD is not removed from under the PMO and supervised by an independent body, confidence in the election system will remain anemic.

The PAP has sent out an e-newsletter underlining its concerns about the rising cost of living in Singapore. In it, the party says that the Government “will not hesitate to roll out more help if the situation worsens.”
It points out the issue of global supply chain but omits mentioning those three ineluctable letters: 'G', 'S' and 'T'.
In the coming months, its MPs will talk about helping citizens, in particular hawkers, to cope with rising costs. But if history is any indication, the MPs will perform breath-taking feats of human logic contortion previously thought impossible to justify the unjustifiable.
Rub away the rhetoric and it comes down to this: At this time when the cost of living, by its own admission, is escalating, the PAP will mati-mati insist on raising the GST to 9%.
For our part, the SDP will continue our fight to stop the PAP from inflicting more pain on the people, as we have done in the last GE. It is not too late to stop the GST hike next year.
