More Than 265 Million Shots
Given: Covid-19 Tracker

In the U.S., 78.6 million doses have been administered; rollout goes global

Updated: March 2, 2021, 6:13 PM EST

The biggest vaccination campaign in history is underway. More than 265 million doses have been administered across 108 countries, according to data collected by Bloomberg. The latest rate was roughly 6.14 million doses a day.

In the U.S., more Americans have now received at least one dose than have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began. So far, 78.6 million doses have been given. In the last week, an average of 1.94 million doses per day were administered.

Vaccines Across America

Across the U.S., 23.7 doses have been administered for every 100 people, and 77% of the shots delivered to states have been administered

Note: Data added after Feb. 20 is from the CDC and includes doses administered by federal entities in state totals. Figures for partial or complete vaccinations refer only to a state’s residents, regardless of where their shots were administered. Historic data gathered from local and federal government websites, official statements and Bloomberg interviews. It can take several days for counts to be reported through the CDC database.

The first stage of the U.S. rollout fell short of federal projections as vaccinations proceeded unevenly across the states. After focusing first on hospitals and other institutional health-care settings, the next phase of vaccinations will draw more on pharmacies and health clinics—places where vaccines are more traditionally administered—and will broaden the pool of people eligible to get the shots. Some states are turning sport stadiums and theme parks into mass vaccination centers.

The Path to Immunity in the U.S.

In the U.S., the latest vaccination rate is 1,942,788 doses per day, on average. At this rate, it will take an estimated 7 months to cover 75% of the population with a two-dose vaccine.

Note: Vaccinating roughly 70% to 85% of a country’s population would enable a return to normalcy, according to top U.S. infectious disease doctor Anthony Fauci. Current vaccines require two doses for full protection. Data are from Bloomberg’s Covid-19 Vaccine Tracker.

In an effort to speed up vaccinations after the rocky start, the U.S. government on Jan. 12 began encouraging states to start immunizing all residents 65 and older, along with those ages 16 and older with certain medical conditions. The directive would open vaccinations up to more than a third of the U.S. population. The Biden administration has said that it’s working to expand the supply of vaccines to help meet that goal.

Distribution of Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine, as well as Moderna’s shot is directed by the federal government. Both vaccines require two doses taken several weeks apart. So far, 51.8 million have received at least one dose. At least 26.2 million people have completed the two-dose vaccination regimen.

Global Effort to Stop Covid
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has now been cleared for use across North America, Europe and the Middle East, and vaccination campaigns have begun in at least 108 countries. That shot and the vaccine from Moderna were both found to reduce coronavirus infections by 95% in trials of tens of thousands of volunteers. A vaccine by AstraZeneca Plc and University of Oxford got its first major authorization, by the U.K., on Dec. 30.

Other countries got a head start on vaccinations. China and Russia authorized their own shots in July and August, before they’d been fully tested. Since then, the countries have administered millions of doses, though they provide less frequent updates on their progress.

When will life return to normal? It’s a complicated question and the subject of debate among epidemiologists. While the best vaccines are thought to be about 95% effective, it may still be possible to spread the disease after getting inoculated. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious-disease official in the U.S., has said that vaccinating 70% to 85% of the U.S. population would enable a return to normalcy.

On a global scale, that’s a daunting level of vaccination. Shots are currently being reported at an average rate of 6.14 million a day. At that pace it would take years to achieve a significant level of global immunity. The rate, however, is steadily increasing, and new vaccines by additional manufacturers may soon be available.

The Path to Immunity Around the World

Globally, the latest vaccination rate is 6,144,069 doses per day, on average. At this rate, it will take an estimated 5 years to cover 75% of the population with a two-dose vaccine.

With the start of the global vaccination campaign, countries have experienced unequal access to vaccines and varying degrees of efficiency in getting shots into people’s arms. Israel’s rate of innoculations dwarfs the efforts of other nations, with 91.6 doses administered for every 100 people. Most countries haven’t yet given their first shots.

Delivering billions of vaccines to stop the spread of Covid-19 worldwide will be one of the greatest logistical challenges ever undertaken.

Vaccine Timeline
Bloomberg is tracking the development of nine of the globe’s most promising vaccines. A total of seven vaccines are now available for public use, in limited quantities, in at least 108 countries.

Nations have poured billions of dollars into developing new vaccine technologies, testing them in thousands of volunteers, scaling up manufacturing, and then bringing them to market in record time.

None of these shots, on its own, is enough to inoculate a global population of some 7.8 billion people. But together they represent humanity’s best chance of ending a scourge that has claimed more than 2.2 million lives and triggered global economic calamity.

A Gold Coast Health spokeswoman said the worker received the vaccine on March 4 and had a history of anaphylaxis.

“Anaphylaxis has been identified as a possible side-effect from any vaccination,” she said.

“... The response was prompt and effective and the patient received the appropriate treatment and has since recovered.”

Vaccine recipients are typically observed for 15 minutes after receiving an injection, or 30 minutes if a history of anaphylaxis is identified in the screening process, the spokeswoman said.

“Staff are well-prepared for this and stringent processes are in place to manage such reactions,” she said.

People who have had severe allergic or anaphylactic reactions to anything can still get the vaccine, but must tell the immunisation provider beforehand.

Australia's COVID-19 vaccine targets will require a dramatic ramping up of our national rollout

Casey Briggs examines the federal government's targets for the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines
Share

It's a lofty vaccination goal, and getting there would mean rapidly ramping up Australia's rollout to become one of the fastest immunisers in the world.
Health Minister Greg Hunt this week reaffirmed the government's goal of vaccinating everyone who wants to be vaccinated by the end of October.
Reaching that target is not impossible, but it represents a massive effort.
"We're really confident that all of the states will continue to ramp up, I understand that there have been different paces … but all of them have good plans," Hunt said on Tuesday.
"There will every week be challenges that will need to be overcome, but that's been the story of the last year."
Before the rollout began, Hunt said 80,000 doses would be distributed in the first week, and gave a "cautious and conservative" estimate that 60,000 of those would be administered in that time.
As it turned out, he was not cautious nor conservative enough.
Only 63,140 doses were distributed, of which just 33,702 were actually injected.

We are well below our target
So far, Australia is yet to administer more than 10,000 doses in a single day.
But to get through all Australians including children, we would need to get to more than 250,000 doses every day, seven days a week.
Stay up-to-date on the coronavirus outbreak
That's based on the indicative sizes of phases one, two and three of the federal government's roadmap, evenly divided between the number of days left before October 31.
That roadmap provides for enough doses for every single Australian, including supply for the minority who won't take up a vaccine.
Inoculating only adults would require just shy of 200,000 jabs a day every day until the end of October — which aligns with an analysis by University of New South Wales researchers.

The US and UK haven't cracked it
Our vaccination campaign is only 10 days old, and it was always going to start slowly, but every day the country is off the pace, the mountain to be climbed gets higher.
And that mountain is already very high by global standards: comparing per-capita vaccination rates overseas to Australia's target shows it really is an ambitious logistical effort.
The United Kingdom and United States, two large countries that were very quick to start vaccination, are still scaling up, but are below Australia's target pace more than two months after their campaigns began.

Small countries leading the way
Very few countries are vaccinating citizens at a pace like Australia is hoping for, and the ones that are managing it tend to be very small nations.
Israel — the country with the highest vaccination rate in the world — is on that pace, as is the Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates was overshooting that bar until recently.

Sri Lanka, a country that's a month into its own vaccine program, is currently running at around 15 per cent of Australia's target pace.

What lies ahead?
Australian vaccinations are unlikely to speed up dramatically before local manufacturer CSL starts producing vials.
The challenge for state governments is to be ready to get those vials into patients as quickly as possible once that supply arrives.
