THEY met while training at the Police Academy in Thomson Road in 2001. Now, the lovers are both in jail.
Md Rahimin Abdullah, 28, was yesterday sentenced to three years and nine months in jail for theft, cheating and housebreaking.
His accomplice, Nur Hamidah Abdul Hamid, also 28, was jailed for two years and nine months on July 9. She had left the police force in 2006. Rahimin, who was suspended from the force, lost his job upon his conviction.
A district court heard that between January and August last year, he made purchases and withdrawals amounting to nearly $40,000 with credit and ATM cards belonging to Nur Hamidah’s former flatmate and her relatives.
Despite moving out in 2008, Nur Hamidah held onto a set of the flat’s house keys. Shortly after, she began stealing from the premises and on two occasions, she did it with Rahimin.
But their luck ran out on Aug 29 when Rahimin tried to buy two mobile phones using a credit card issued to the sister of the former flatmate.
When sales staff demanded his identity card as verification, Rahimin tried to flee but was detained. His lawyer Suresh Damodara said that his client was infatuated with Nur Hamidah and was used by the wily woman.
However, District Judge Eddy Tham ruled out leniency as Rahimin had been a police officer when he committed the offences.
Rahimin pleaded guilty to eight theft charges, five cheating charges and two housebreaking offences.
