Cops to find out number of babies sold by syndicate
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are trying to determine the actual number of babies involved in the baby-selling syndicate operated by a private hospital at Jalan Ipoh here. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said police saved two babies when they raided the hospital, which had been in operation for more than 30 years, two days ago.
“Hence, we want those who have bought them from the hospital, or obtained babies in a suspicious manner, to come forward with information,” he told reporters here. He said police had so far arrested six people, comprising a “Datuk” doctor and his two family members and three hospital staff. He said police would seek help from the National Registration Department in the investigation.
In another case, Acryl said a 42-year-old owner of a child care centre at Jalan Klang Lama was detained after a volunteer, who was a former newspaper photographer, claimed that the man often abused the children at the centre. The 58-year-old volunteer had earlier surrendered to the police following a report that he had sexually abused several boys, aged between nine and 14 at the centre, he added. He said police were working with the Social Welfare Department to trace the parents and next-of-kin of the children. — Bernama
