Cops to find out number of babies sold by syndicate

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are trying to determine the actual number of babies involved in the baby-selling syndicate operated by a private hospital at Jalan Ipoh here. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said police saved two babies when they raided the hospital, which had been in operation for more than 30 years, two days ago.

“Hence, we want those who have bought them from the hospital, or obtained babies in a suspicious manner, to come forward with information,” he told reporters here. He said police had so far arrested six people, comprising a “Datuk” doctor and his two family members and three hospital staff. He said police would seek help from the National Registration Department in the investigation.

In another case, Acryl said a 42-year-old owner of a child care centre at Jalan Klang Lama was detained after a volunteer, who was a former newspaper photographer, claimed that the man often abused the children at the centre. The 58-year-old volunteer had earlier surrendered to the police following a report that he had sexually abused several boys, aged between nine and 14 at the centre, he added. He said police were working with the Social Welfare Department to trace the parents and next-of-kin of the children. — Bernama

Private hospital operating without licence

A PRIVATE hospital in Kuala Lumpur was found to have an expired operating licence when police raided the place on suspicion that it was involved in a baby-selling syndicate. The raid took place after the sale of a week-old baby girl for RM21,000 to a couple, Berita Harian reported yesterday. Police confiscated her birth certificate and the cash.

They also managed to rescue a four-month-old baby boy. The syndicate priced the babies based on race and sex. Chinese babies were the most expensive because of high demand and low availabilty and were sold based on weight – RM10,000 per kilo.

Six suspects including the hospital owner (a doctor holding a Datuk title), his wife, daughter, another doctor and three nurses were taken into custody. The hospital in Jalan Ipoh, was at the appeal stage of renewing its licence at the time of the raid. The Health Ministry might withdraw the hospital’s licence if it is found guilty.
