A 40-year-old man in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayanagaram district was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a six-month-old baby, police said on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Boyina Verikkayya Dora, is a distant relative of the baby's family and resides in a neighbouring village.

The man tried to sexually assault the baby on Saturday and fled the spot after the family found out about the incident. He was arrested earlier today after police launched a manhunt.

"The baby girl has been sent for medical treatment and the accused has been booked under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," a senior police official said, adding that he will soon be presented before the magistrate.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
