There is nobody in kalimantan.small population.
Sumatra lies on the trade routes. Its underdeveloped due to emphasis on java, which has more than hslf of indonesia population of maybe 250 mil.

This fault is huge though, and the distance involved is long. Don’t forget the Christmas 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it came from a magnitude 9.1 earthquake that had a plate movement of 40 meters. This wasn’t the Sumatran fault, but it does indicate how seismically active the area is.

when toba sexplodes “several hundred clicks” won’t be enough. may be 6.9k clicks to the north or south will be safer, but over time the ash cloud will cover half the planet along the equatorial belt as earth rotates. any cuntry from tropic of cancer to tropic of capricorn is fucked.
